Hi all,

How big is the new Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 in terms of needs for RAM, Disk and CPU for just the hypervisor? My real reason is I am trying to figure out if I can just use a 32GB or 64GB SSD and 16GB RAM on one of those C2550's.

If someone knows and can point me in the correct direction I would appreciate it. If not, I am happy to test but don't really know how to see this so may need some pointers on what to observe if I do try. Like I'm not sure how to see how much memory is available to VM's and stuff and how much disk you really need over time (will put VMs on a second disk)

If you use it only as a Hyper-V host (and you should) then the only thing that you should keep in mind is that it will need 2GB of RAM as a reserve. Nothing much more than that...

To test I put Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 in a VM with an expanding disk. Not at home now but it was sub 7GB. I'd say just for a hypervisor base disk you could get away with a small boot drive.

My Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 (full install with GUI) c:\windows\ directory is 20.5GB. Totall disk space usage on the c:\ partition is 22.2GB. Running it on a 80GB ssd. My VM's are stored on a second SSD.

So a 32GB SSD would do fine.

Sorry for the reply to an old topic, but I thought I'd share my experience from last weekend setting a test with Hyper-V Server 2012 R2.

Out of the 8GB RAM in my computer it uses roughly 1,1GB RAM when installed, without any VM's configured.
Disk space after installation of the Hyper-V 2012 R2 plus all available updates is roughly 10GB.

At the moment I only have a VM running pFsense 2.2-Beta with 1GB RAM and a 4GB dynamic vhdx.
I hope to buy a 2758 somewhere next year, and doubting a bit how much memory I will put in it.
32GB seems more then enough for me right now.
