The same drives were $119 last year (I should know, I bought 4 of the exact drives for Black Friday). Decent pricing, but I am more disappointed that areal density/pricing didn't improve as quickly as they did on the solid state side of things.

I bought 10 x 3TB HGST Deskstars 5-7 years ago for this price (whenever it was on sale I'd pick up 1 or 2 at a time as budget permitted). Over the course of 5-7 years the same price for a drive that's just ~33% larger isn't really that good of a deal.... on its own (compared to similar drives' pricing right now) it is, just not if you look at historical pricing on drives.

Yeah its not the best, especially when you can get used 4TB UltraStars for half that.

I think those are 3.5" drives within the shell.
It's the STDR5000404. They are the external 5tb 2.5" drives that I've been waiting for almost a year for a sale like this. Now I get the costco warranty as well. Will probably pick up 1 or 2 more as a hot spare at this price.

They would not have TLER would they?

Probably worth noting that in comparison to this drive deal, the STDR5000404 is a density-focused 2.5" drive using SMR. Yes it's a lot of Storage space, but they are not useful in any meaningful capacity aside from single-disk jbods. Making 2 or more SMR drives work together in a pool is a recipe for pain given the wild swings in latency.

Thank you for the clarification, now clear.
