I haven't seen it posted, but it seems that there are a lot of L5639's being dumped on Ebay right now. While they're not quite as nice as L5640's, they're currently going for ~$150 each, instead of the $200+ for ES versions of the L5640's (which they should be pretty equivalent to, since I think that the ES turbo isn't as high as the retail version; their base clock is low, their turbo settings are pretty nice at 2/2/3/3/4/4, so they actually beat the L5520's at the same number of cores active).

I'm trying to decide myself if it's worth upgrading from a pair of L5520's or not. The L5520's were so cheap (~$36 each), that the 50% more cores at slightly better clocks, AES, along with handling 2xDIMMs per channel at 1333MHz instead of 1066MHz doesn't quite seem to be worth the price premium of over 4x... But they're by far the cheapest hex core's that I've seen and maybe they will get even cheaper since there seem to be so many of them for sale.

Some insight here. Apparently after the L5520 gen C6100s there were bunches of L5639 C6100s. Many of the sellers were buying lots with the faster processor versions then putting in the L5520 processors. Expect more on the market soon

I'm scared to even imagine what the power consumption would be on that thing. Darn good price though.

C7000 G5 with high-end CPUs had nameplate draw of 6,500 watts. Full rack of 2x chassis would draw 13,000 watts. More typical draw would be about half that amount. With L5639s you should see about 180w/blade + 100-200 watts for the switch and commons. Just about 3,000 watts running prime95 on all blades...

Power in isn't the only problem...heat out is a PITA to manage too.

That is a good price, though. Works out to $500/blade + $0 for the redundant switch/chassis/PSUs and commons. Not a bad deal at all if you need something like that!

The only thing I can think about with that is how much it would cost to colo! That's a lot of power.

nope this is a server xeon. ecc required

Blades are more efficient so take your pc - 100 watt idle, and reduce 20%

1500 watts idle, but remember esxi can hibernate hosts with DPM and DRS can move them around to save on energy.

Plus you always do n+1 for a spare so maybe drop that back down.

two X5650 eat 200 watts more than two L5639 at peak usage - that's something to chew on.

So you idle out the blades you don't need , the only problem is the C7000 is 3-phase, the unwanted C3000 is single phase and half the number of blades and only 1 OA possible. Last time I was offered one for $75 lol. I passed.

I can drop this in a desktop PC gigabyte ud3r with non ecc memory right? Would be a quick upgrade.
Actually, I think cactus and I had a SR-2 with 2x L5640's and used UDIMMs with it a long time ago. I think he's moving but he may be able to confirm.

The other question is how much can you sell your old chip for.
