These specific units are so cheap because of the 'low-end' motherboards of the nodes which allow low-end Bronze/Silver/Gold CPU's only. Take little bit more money in your hands and get nice Nutanix nodes for better high-end CPU support > 205W/255A which are also thrown out the last 2-3 months.

EDIT: The Bargainhardware units are similar to the Nutanix nodes

The stripped boards was the appeal for me originaly, pure compute nodes with as little overhead as possible.

For higher end specs i love 2U2N like the nutanix/supermicro units that pop up now and then fairly cheap.

who cares ? there is usualy no person in a server room sleeping.
When the wife and dog start to snore, the garage with the servers is mine ...

Yeah I like to watch people with little overhead as possible. When they have to jump, they always .....

Speak for yourself :D . Also I'm looking to use them at home and the noise of 2u units tends to vary wildly hence asking
There are custom solutions out there where you can swap the high rpm fans with water-cooling solutions. Seen these for 2U2N solutions more often than in 2U4N solutions. But they are definitely out there, costly for the whole barebone, but take away a lot of noise and heat. You could contact Alphacool and work with them for a custom solution. Done that on usual 2U & 1U1N servers and it worked great.

I got one a few months ago, and it was WAY TOO LOUD compared to what I expected. I'm currently looking for a way to reduce the fan speed using ipmitool, but I have had no luck.

bad idea: 2nd CPU gets hot air of the 1st. old(aged) electronics tend to draw more power than new, and gets hotter.
i doubt the vendor makes them extra loud to prevent private people from putting these things in their apartments.

Can this be solved by only using one CPU per node? I planned to use this 4-node server to expand my existing R730 and Supermicro cluster with E5 v3/v4 inside, so I can have rather more nodes without taking up too many rack units.
I put my servers in the basement, but this one is 10 times louder than the R730s. Even on the second floor, I can hear the noise with the basement door closed.

I managed to get one of those for 188€ shipped to Croatia. Seems like great deal. 12c 4116 CPU's are like 50-60€ a pair.

149+ 40 ship as only bidder is how i grabbed mine also.
And picked up a few sets of regular nodes at 20-50/ea ive replaced some of the original stripped ones with.

Do the regular nodes have the same VRM/CPU limitation as the stripped "compute only" nodes? I've also nabbed one of these...but my large collection of gen1 scalable cpus is almost useless here..

Listed as upto 165w, mine are specced with a mix of 6133 (150w) and 6138 (125w).
