Which ASUS server did you order? I assume from Newegg.com

I spent way too much money this Christmas on stuff, now I forced myself to wait 72 hours, if the ASUS server still available on Newegg by tomorrow ( or mid-night tonight ), then I may order one.

ASUS TS700-E8-PS4 5U/Tower Server Barebone 2 x Socket R3 (LGA 2011-3) Intel C612 PCH DDR4 2400 / 2133 / 1866 / 1600 RDIMM DDR4 2400 / 2133 / 1866 / 1600 LRDIMM - Newegg.com

Looks like the 35% off is good till saturday. Even with tax it was under $500 to my door. The board itself goes for about that much. So basically you are getting a 1200w power supply and a tower chassis with 4 hotswap 3.5's for free.

So I have a question for you guys. I've got the bug and was considering doing another xeon build for my gaming PC to replace a i5 6600k (running at 4.6ghz). My question would be what would you recommend as a replacement? I had thought about a 1650 v3 retail since it's overclockable, but that's more expensive than an i7-6800k... Anyone who games on a xeon have any recommendations? I also considered a e5-2667 V4 since I thought the cores maintained a decent speeed. I really couldn't spend more than 350 on the cpu, so this may not be a realistic goal...

Short answer is it depends.

Long answer:
It depends on what gaming you are doing and where the bottle neck is. Some games will take advantage of multiple cores and others are single threaded. I had a system with a E5-2676 V3 CPU and ran in to a wall with the FPS on world of warcraft as it is old and really uses a single thread. I swapped my gaming to a 6600K oc'd to 4.4ghz and the game runs much better. The E5-2667 V4 looks like it could be a good processor but again, it depends.

Yeah I figured it wasn't going to be a clear cut thing. Too bad the 16xx series are too expensive. I'll probably just pick up the 6800k from microcenter for $370 and call it good...

I have 2 10 core E5-2650 V3 ES (QEYN) coming DHL today, signature required. Hopefully they will work in the Asus Barebones (z10pe-d16 ws board) I have coming. If not I will find some cheap x99 boards to throw them in for other uses. They were cheap enough as it was. At $150/ea the were cheaper than a new i5 CPU.
Got the barebones in and popped in the CPU's they seem to work great. Cinebench R15 is over 2300, stressing them with aida64 right now. Hottest core is 68c with the HSF that came with the barebones.

Well that is no good. Probably a silly question but do you have the latest bios flashed on the board? Have you been able to get a refund/replacement from the seller? Good luck!
BIOS is quite recent. The CPU has damages to the contacts. Have to ship it back for a refund, a huge waste of time...

It looks like the supply of V4 ES CPUs are drying out and the price is going up? The upcoming V5 no longer uses LGA2011-V3. How long would it take for there to be an abundant amount of retired V4s from datacenters?

Hey Guys, I am new to this forum.
Just like member "custom90gt" from a few lines above i've got the bug and was considering building a Xeon but for a 4k Video editing PC to replace a i7 2600k (running at 4.3ghz).
I have read many pages on this forum but i am struggeling what to buy. Because i want to avoid buying an ES and it will be slower than my 2600k :' D
But here's the thing: I edit with adobe premiere pro. Version CC2014 and CS6 both are better off with a high core count, but the latest versions do not benifit from higher core count anymore (source: puget systems).

I concidered :
i7-6800k Pros: new and (not really good) overclockable. Cons: expensive, maybe a little step up from my 2600k.
i7 5820k from ebay: Pros: cheaper (315 dollar), almost same speed as 6800k and better overclockable. Cons: maybe a little step up from my 2600k.
And the reason i come here is, what if Adobe brings back the multi CPU/Core support into the software? Maybe i can find a sweet spot Cpu like a Xeon with maybe 8 or 10 cores.

I considered these e5-2667 V3 and V4:

Intel Xeon E5-2667 v4 ES LGA2011-3 2.9GHz Compatible with X99 i7-6900K 6950X | eBay

Intel Xeon E5-2667 V3 ES QEYA 8Core 2.9GHz 9.6GT/s 35M Smart Cache Processor CPU | eBay

I thought the cores maintained a decent speed.
The supplier told me the turbo is around 3.5 GHZ but i don't really trust it.
Also the V4 is slower than my 2600K when i look at the cinebench score. Is that even possible? These V3 and V4 are both at 2,9 GHZ.

Someone on this forum pointed out that an Intel Xeon E5-2686 v3 is very nice since they turbo to 3,5GHZ, but those are way to expensive for me.
So what would you recommend as a replacement of my 2600K?

So many thanks in advance!

Mark

Shouldn't be an issue with compatibility for either the V3/V4 ES Xeons but I'd recommend the bios is up to date however.
Great thnx for your reply!

any recommendations about which xeon i should buy for video editing?

Ok great! Though video editing is the main priority i dont want to go to low on core frequency . It must be a balance in core count en freq. I have a 2600k atm.

What score do you get with your current 2600k setup? ES chips are usually lower than retail version. And, as you can see their hwinfo 64 window, the turbo will be 3.2 Ghz, not 3.5. I just set up two E5-2658 v3 QS (2.2 Ghz, 2.9 Ghz Turbo, 2.5 Ghz All Cores Turbo) with Supermicro X10-DRL-i motherboard. I measured the Cinebench R15 and I have 2850. My previous i5-3570k OC 4.4Ghz had 670 something.

Hey quick question... my QS processor is in transit from taiwan, and my mobo/ram is on the way as well. Is there any go-to way to test that all the features of the CPU are functioning as expected? I'll be making use of virtualization on mine, so I suppose I could set up a quick esxi test or something.

Just wondering what you guys do when you get your CPU in to make sure it's good to go.. I want to make sure nothing creeps up on me within the 30 day return window as I am still ordering other parts and such

Is this a good tool?

Download Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool

I would run something like Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool on the processor and let it stress test it just make sure to disable the check it has for engineering sample processors otherwise it may not let you do the test.
Great thanks. I just edited my posted with that actually.. good tip on the ES setting
