Hey guys, new to the whole buying ES Xeon's. I need to save some cash, so that is why I am going this route. However, trying to figure out what Q-Specs/stepping are closest to the OEM release has me spinning in circles. I am looking to build either a single or dual socket 2011-v3 server. Which CPU offering from xtrememicro (I believe that seller has the best ratings on ebay) should I go with? I am looking to keep it below $350 per CPU. I will be running the CPU(s) in a SuperMicro mobo. I was originally looking at something like the E5-2670v3, but don't want to buy something that doesn't have turbo on all cores or support VT-d. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was hoping to find a cheat sheet somewhere w/ the Q-Spec's and stepping info, but no luck yet (or the seller doesn't have anything listed besides stepping 1). I was wondering if there is a list (other then from the sellers on ebay) of motherboards that actually work with ES v3 and v4 cpu's ..? Would like to see some confirmation from actual people running this hardware at home

What happens if the mobo (Asus Z10) comes with an older BIOS? Will it boot at some low speed and allow a BIOS update at some stage or it won't work at all and we'd need to find a "proper" CPU to do BIOS update first?
Yeah, that is what I mean...I know for a fact that list is incorrect that is why I was wondering if the topicstarter would be so kind to put a sticky in the topic with stuff that people have running or tested for themselves.

Since that CPU seems to dissapear from stock all the time, I wonder if anyone can recommend other V3 or V4 cpus that have around 2000 Cinebench score and 1-2 core Turbo of 3.5GHz or more, and work well with multiple gpus. Will be ordering parts in September, so if the 2686V3 isn't available, need an alternative.
I'm simply looking to build a single cpu workstation for 3d and video work. I had a dual E5-2660 (V1) system before and would like to at least match that system in cpu rendering performance, and get higher turbo speed for single threaded applications.
In preparation for possible use of gpu renderers (one reason why I avoid 5820k/6800k), and after looking at recommended boards from ebay sellers, I'm going for an Asrock X99 WS (the simplest one of their WS line). Anyone has an ES chip in this board?

I have the Asus board and dual E5-2670's on the way, but after reading more about ES chips and eBay chips in general, I'm wondering if the 2695 v2 or even 2697 v2 would be a better purchase. If I install the E5-2670's now, would it be relatively simple to swap them out for 2695 v2's or 2697 v2's later on?
This is all LGA 2011 as far as I know, so any of these chips should just work, right?

For any cpu/motherboard check socket type for both. If they match then the cpu is compatible with the motherboard. You might also want to check TDP for both cpu and motherboard.
As for swapping cpus it should be an easy task.
