I am trying to add a JBOD DAS to my dell R620 server which is using ZFS (not hardware raid). I have an HBA flashed to it-mode (LSI 9217E1I1 with 2118 it firmware) which is connected to the internal r620s backplane with the additioan external MiniSAS intended for the JBOD DAS.

I am considering either building my own JBOD enclosure or going with a dell MD1200. I am leaning toward the MD1200 solution since it appears that the cost of the hardware required to build a decent sas2 12-16 bay enclosure would actually cost more than the MD1200.

Questions:
1. Is my LSI SAS Controller (LSI 9217E1I1 with 2118 it firmware) supported/compatible with the MD1200?
2. If not, any recommendations on a better das solution? I am not concerned about noise level or power consumption, just affordability.

Note: my server is running Proxmox zfs and my das is intended for Plex media storage.

No first hand experience but heard it requires dell branded/FW hard drives

You may want to explore Supermicro 826 or 836 chassis
