Dell Compellent SC200/SC400 Enclosures & SATA?

Long time lurker (even before actually opening an account here).

I'm hoping someone has some ideas here. A brief background - I have a number of Dell SC200, SC220, SC400, and SC420 enclosures that were removed from two different Dell Compellent clusters (2x SC8000's and 2xSC9000's - which I also have). I'm looking to repurpose the enclosures themselves in a new TrueNAS SCALE deployment to replace my Debian file server with older Xyratex HB-1235 enclosures. I had read many people on these forums having success with SATA disks on these enclosures. So, it seemed a good time to retire the HB-1235's.

I have two SC420s running fine with 4TB SAS SSDs. The problem I'm having is that I cannot get the SC200's or SC400's to recognize SATA disks, with or without interposers installed. I've tried Seagate Ironwolf 10TB Red, Seagate Exos 20TB, and even some really old WD RED 6TB and Seagate 1TB Baracuda disks. Without the interposer attached, the lower light of the drive sled illuminates, but there's never any activity light present. With the interposer installed, no lights at all illuminate. TrueNAS SCALE never notices the drive getting inserted or removed in all cases. If I insert a SAS disk, everything functions as expected. Ideally, I'd like to run the Exos disks in there.

I've tried both Dell PN939 interposers and NetApp DS4243/DS4246 ones (which seemed to be the recommended ones).

The SC400 reports firmware v1.09 via lsscsi (which I suspect is the problem). There's a USB service port which identifies itself as an FTDI serial device on the back of the EMM's in the SC4x0 enclosures, but it asks for a password and I have not been able to figure out what that password is. I was hoping there was a feature or function that could be used in there to determine the reason for the drives not coming up.

I've been through that thread a few times and found good nuggets of information here and there, but nothing really specific about the SC400-series. Indeed, there were a couple of people asking about SATA support not working, but no suggestions for fixes.

I'm trying to get my hands on a serial cable for the SC200-series or I may make one this weekend, but my main focus is on the SC400s.

Do you have SAS cables plugged into both EMM or just one? Can you try with just the top EMM SAS cable plugged in? I have access to an SC400 and could try this later to confirm, but my understanding is that SATA drives in these enclosures only ever talk via the top EMM, which also always seeks to be the master/primary EMM of the chassis (not that it matters but interesting note).

I did have SAS cables connected to both EMM's. For grins, I removed the lower EMM, tested, and then reinserted the lower EMM, pulled the upper one, power-cycling the enclosure between tests, and I get the same results as above.

I do have several Dell SAS 4TB disks for this enclosure. I made one additional observation with them. When inserting a SAS disk, the lower light blinks for 3-5 seconds before turning solid green. When inserting the SATA disk with the interposer, the light does not illuminate at all. Non-interposer SATA disks simply illuminate a dim green with no blinking. My assumption is the EMMs are rejecting or otherwise not recognizing the SATA disks. Either way, it's odd behavior.

Interesting, OK. I have SC200's running right now with some SATA drives connected via a 9201. I'll be honest I've never tried an SC400 but I guess I always assumed it would work the same. I'll try to put some SATA drives in an SC400 this weekend and see if I get the same behavior out of curiosity and post back here once done.

Minor update... After examining a firmware image I had as part of the former Compellent's SCOS upgrade, I discovered the SC400 is actually an MD1400 in disguise, and the SC420 is actually an MD1420 - which makes sense given the history of the SC200/SC220. The USB serial password for both is "bluemoon" for anyone down the road.

Mods - if this isn't OK to post here, please feel free to blank out the password. Given the Compellent has been recently EOL/EOS (also why I have it in my possession now), I hope it's OK.

Well, kind of looking like I made an incorrect assumption because SATA worked in the SC200 it would work in the SC400. Like you are seeing, my SATA drives aren't coming online. Interestingly enclosure sees this as a bad phy

Some surfing around google looks like there are a few posts saying SATA doesn't work with the MD1400. Curious.

Where were you pulling the state from?

It sort of makes me wonder if this is a firmware limitation that was imposed or an actual hardware limitation -- or even an obscure configuration option within the engineering console. I'll pull one of my SC200s out again and see what's going on there, but I seem to remember I was getting the same response. Could be a firmware thing if that's the case.

I'm torn if this is firmware, its turned off in the configuration or a hardware limitation (this one I dont' think so).

I wasn't very hopeful, but manually setting the speed (3G and 6G) via phyop on the SC400 did not help.

I don't have the serial cable for the SC200 yet - I ordered one from eBay after deciding I didn't want to sacrifice one of the few PS/2 devices I have left. It should arrive this week.

I noticed your SC200 was on v1.03. I have a total of 6 SC200s. The ones from the SC8000 seem to also be on v1.03 according to lsscsi. They work fine. My assumption of "newer firmware is better" definitely holds false here. The SC200s that were connected to the SC9000s are running v1.06, and do not work. I'm halfway tempted to load the 1.04 image I have for the SC400s to see if there's any luck there - it's included in the scMaintenanceInstall_R06.07.05.005.03.iso I kept an archive of. If I wasn't concerned about bricking the thing, that is.

Still, I'm leaning more toward firmware being the culprit for the SC400s. I'd consider placing good money on Dell disabling SATA support somewhere along the line - especially as Compellent units started showing up on the used market.

I'm not saying its not possible, but I don't think the Compellent developers would have disabled SATA support out of spite. Compellent controlled the drives installed primarily using a Dell vendor flag in the drives firmware, they also had information written to the drive to classify it as a server/PowerVault drive, SC drive, EQL drive and later SCv drive. I don't think it would have been worth their time to disable SATA support unless the PowerVault folks did so and that firmware then made it into an SC release (not like they would have tested SATA drives as those were never supported on SC).

You are right though my SC200's are on older firmware, they worked so I never saw fit to change it. I have a spare not in use so out of curiosity in the next few days I can mirror what you are doing. Upgrade the firmware on my spare SC200 and try downgrading the firmware on this SC400.

Oh, I don't believe the Compellent folks would have done anything like that for "spite" either. I know a couple of the former Copilot Support staff on a personal level - they're all amazing people that really miss working at Compellent-proper. Since the SC8000 and SC9000 series were little more than the PowerVault systems with SCOS installed, I could see the lack of SATA support as an after-effect versus an intentional change.

I do miss having Compellent at my day-job. That was a 15 year run of probably the best supported, most reliable, storage system in my 30+ years in IT. Dell really should have kept it around for a mid-range solution, but I digress.

I'll likely attempt the downgrade of the SC400 this week and see how it goes. If I brick it, I brick it. It doesn't have much value as a SAS-only enclosure for a home data hoarder like myself...and my electric bill is bad enough. I could load them up with the 4TB SAS disks I have sitting around, but I suspect my wife would murder me. ;)

It looks like the latest official firmware for the SC200's is 1.03 as of SCOS 7.5.10. From the PowerVault realm looks like there is a 1.06. I think there is a therad on here where folks have upgraded to the MD firmware. I guess with that said I'm not sure why these enclosures are working for me but not for you as far as SATA support goes.

For the SC400 got ahold of 1.04 and flashed that. Unfortunately no change, still not seeing the SATA drives. I am not local to the box though, so I can't power cycle the whole enclosure, just power cycle the IO modules and slots following the firmware downgrade.

I had the chance to try 1.04 on one of my SC400s as well. Also, no dice. I suspect getting those to work with SATA disks is a non-starter. I'll keep looking for other things to try there.

My serial cable for the SC200s doesn't arrive until tomorrow. I'll push 1.03 onto one of the SC200s that wouldn't recognize SATA disks and see what happens there.

Didn't read the thread in detail, sorry if it was mentioned already.
SATA is single path, so only one canister/controller has to be installed and it has to be the upper slot. Do a cold start in between your tests.
This config you can mix with SAS-disks.

If you need two or more controllers, you have to use SAS-only for full speed. SATA would need interposer in this config (fakes dual path but cuts the bandwidth 50:50, you probably don't want this)

Firmware revisions and locks are another thing.
