my supermicro d1541 motherboard couldn't recognize any nvme drive so I'm not sure datto's will either. GL tho.

I was about to say my SM d-1540 boards did but then I checked, actually it’s SATA I had onboard and forgot what type it was. I assume I never tried an NVMe drive since I would have remembered if it don’t work.
Are you just refering to functioning, I can’t see why they wouldn’t work really.

Both of my Supermicro Xeon D boards have M.2 slots that work fine with PCIe x4 samsung nvme drives.
I have both in "Production" right now working pretty well. I'm not sure if why your D1541 board didn't recognize the nvme drives.

@Aestr , Are the Seq Read and Seq write numbers on the low side?
It's only got 1 pcie lane per M.2 slot so it's very much limited on the top end. I'd still consider using them because they get much better throughput, latency and IOPs than say a SATA DOM.

If anyone happen to have an extra 1/2 of this I'd be interested to take it off your hands for the cost!

@eroji you're a week too late. I just sold off 2 for cost plus shipping. I'm still holding onto a third, but in the next month or so I may pass it along as well. If that's the way I decide to go I'll check in with you.

Happy times. Testet with a Samsung PM961 NVMe on this Datto board(with latest bios). I confirm that this does indeed show up and works under ESXi :) Have ordered a couple of SM963 to be used with this setup.

However I also put in a SATA disk in the other m.2 slot, this did show up in the bios, but not in ESXi 6.7. But I think this is associated with missing driver for the onboard Marvel 9172 m.2 SATA controller in VMware ESXi

I also recently built a supermicro 1541 system w/ samsung evo 970 nvme, along with lasted ESXi, and didn't have any issues with the drive.

edit: you just have to make sure your bios options are set correctly.

What kind of read\write performance do you guys get with the x1 PCI slot? I only get around 300mbyte\s with a Samsung SM963, running the device in passthrough(through ESXI) to nappit\omnios. Was expecting at least double of this...

Just curious how you guys access this device when used as esx host? Anyone use this with gpu passthrough for light gaming?
