Just curious why I don't see many people going with a Cisco Nexus 5010 20 port or 5020 40 port. 10 GbE switches. N5K-5010 is like 325.00 with a power supply. $150.00 with no PS. 2148T 48x 1GiB fabric extender is 45.00 free shipping. First 8 ports on the switch will do 1gig with standard transceivers or 10gb. sounds like a no brainier for just a standard L2 switch.

You can get 20x 10gbe ports and 48x 1gib ports managed on one switch for $370.00. Just put you a layer 3 upstream for routing. I know some of the NX 3000 series does do L3 but they are way more pricey.

They are loud and hot and power hungry as well.

I have a 5010, it's been rock solid but I wouldn't want it anywhere near me!

I don't know about 5010's but the 5548's are one of the loaders switches / devices I have heard...
FP4120 though seems now to take the crown.
(The 5672 is quieter than 5548 by a good amount though)

But 5672 is still priced as premium switches :(
Oh yes, was not suggesting it was a good home lab switch, just passing comment on the noise.
I do Guess in the next couple of years we will see masses on nexus 55xx/56xx and fex's on the used market, especially as people migrate to ACI.

Now the 93xx/93xxx series are good switches that may have been used behind nexus 5k/7k setups that may come used and with the 40g SFP uplinks and the license can act as leaf switches in an ACI setup, but I expect most would just use them as a powerful layer 3 switch.

Anyway back to the topic unless you have a separate place for your home network then all the nexus Gera is really load, and all are power hungry, unless you want to learn to use them I would generally not advise jumping on them or at least go in with an open mind about noise and power.

Datasheet does say the 5010 is 350w typical power usage. 1536 BTU/hr. I know for me that wont be a issue. My rack is vented to the outside with a 6" duct. I have some screaming meanie super micro 1u servers. I don't think anything can be louder then that for a 1u.

heat isn't any issue for me.

little more noise wont hurt.

Can you go more into how you built the exhaust system? I am interested in doing something similar.
