Hi,

I want to build a little homeserver/NAS and am searching a good but not too expensive Motherboard for this build.
Some features I'd like to have on the MB:
- C236 Chipset (I'd like to use the iGPU)
- 6 SATA III ports at least, better 8
- M.2 port for the system drive and a fast cache
- ITX or mATX
- 2 or 4 DDR-4 ECC slots
- if possible RAID 6, otherwise I'll go for a RAID 5 or 10
- Budget: under 200€/$

I haven't decided yet whether to use a ITX or mATX MB. It's also a question of price, features and case (still looking for a case for 6-8 HDD's which is smaller than 32.5 x 32.5 x 50 cm or 12.75" x 12.75" x 20").
The biggest problem is that I can't find hardly any MB available in an online store (I'm from Germany). To be honest the only MB I found in a store was the Asus P10S-I for ~175€.
The rest of the configuration would be:
- i3 6100
- 8-16GB DDR-4 2133 ECC RAM
- 128GB SanDisk Z400s M.2 SSD
- 300W beQuiet PSU
- 3TB WD Red HDD's

Bye!
Tommy

The problem is the M2 port as this require the newest socket 1151 board.
look mainly at SuperMicro or Asrock and prefer uATX as they are cheaper than ITX
and offer much more upgrade options - think of 10Gbe that you want now or later
or an extra HBA
ex ASRock Rack > C236M WS
ASRock Rack > E3C236D2I

or
Super Micro Computer, Inc. - Products | Motherboards | Xeon

if you cannot wait, check 1150 boards.
You can add the M2 with a pcie adapter.

btw
why do you want the M2?
You do not need for a NAS unless you use 10Gb or use virtualisation.
In this case, check solutions with an included LSI HBA and a Xeon
as this offers all virtualisation options including storage VM virtualisation.

out of your price demands but extraordinary with 10G and 12G SAS/Sata
ASRock Rack > EPC612D4U-2T8R

And
rethink your raid 5/6 ideas, use software raid with ZFS
more reliable, faster and a higher level of datasecurity with checksums and versioning
with snaps that enables to go back to former file states.

Hi gea, thank you for your replie!
Since I'm planning to build a skylake based NAS I have to use the 1151 socket and C236 chipset, regardless of whether I want m.2 or not.
I would like to use a m.2 ssd as a super fast cache for the HDD's and as the system drive. I prefer an m.2 ssd over an usb drive or loosing one SATA Port.

I have already seen the C236M WS and it would be my first choice - if I could find it somewhere to buy. Do you have any suggestions for an (european) online-store?

I'm still hover between using ZFS (FreeNAS) and WindowsServer.

Bye,
Tommy

The board is too new, should be available soon at least until Cebit.

btw.
I am happy that I a was able to replace all my Windows filer with ZFS
- more reliable and secure, faster, easier to manage without beweekly downtime due security updates.
I always use Solaris or the free fork OmniOS the origin of ZFS with best Windows compatibility on Unix.

For Solaris/ OmniOS I have written a NAS/SAN installer to switch a default enterprise OS into a NAS/SAN together with a Web-UI, see http://www.napp-it.org/doc/downloads/napp-in-one.pdf

Maybe this can be a third option.

ps
dies ist ein US Forum - English is expected..
auch wenn hier viele aus der EU/De unterwegs sind
