Brocade VDX 6740

Looking at purchasing 3 or 4 VDX 6740 switches from a local failed IT tech company. Read a lot of info on here and reddit but I want to verify few things before I buy them and start spending a decent chunk of my free time and money on making them work. Opinions on the VDX series seems to be much worse than the other brocade switches and I don't want to get myself into a mess.

Is it possible to license these to a higher level than they are now for only homelab use? I would love to uses the 40gb ports for fabric or to dell servers.
Are these difficult to find SFP+ modules or DAC cables that are compatible?
Can I upgrade from 4.0.x to the latest firmware?

I ended up purchasing 2 VDX 6740. Someone else got the others. I was able to reset the admin password using the dell method found on this forum. Hardware reports OK and I would like to upgrade the switch to start learning it more. My problem is I do not see any licenses when I boot the switch up and yet

My version is very low at 4.1.3b. I understand if I upgrade from USB straight to 7.2 I will lose my QSPF licensing. I am fine with just 24 SFP+ ports usable. Can someone help me save my license or generate a new license after upgrading?

Capture the serial console and the license strings should be displayed. Search for syslog section "SEC-3051" or "The license key". They should be printed after ports are shown administratively up.

I can't help here. Maybe your 40G licenses are intrinsic to the model. Clearly your dpod output shows there is no 40G in your base license.

Could you issue show license all?

Your situation may be better resolved if you talk with Extreme. They can identify if your license is tied to the FRU. But my current guess is the old NOS doesn't show the license strings.

Yeah, maybe raslog will show them for 4.x.

Versions 6 and beyond show them during boot. I think best bet is to perform rolling upgrades to preserve the licenses. My switch never had NOS that old.

Another thing to try is to go into fos/foscmd and poke around the file system.

   1. Configuration is retained during each firmware upgrade version
   2. Traffic only impacted on single home devices while switch reboots during upgrade
2. Disadvantages
   1. Requires much more time as each upgrade needs to be completed on all switches before moving to the next firmware version

I ended up purchasing 2 VDX 6740. Someone else got the others. I was able to reset the admin password using the dell method found on this forum. Hardware reports OK and I would like to upgrade the switch to start learning it more. My problem is I do not see any licenses when I boot the switch up and yet

Extreme networking denied my service account creation and have been honestly the worst network vendor I have tried to work with. Granted I had no service contract but it is the first time a vendor has not made a 1 time exception or allowed for security concern etc to download a firmware. I have heard good things about extreme in the past but after the last few days I have zero interest in ever trying their products.

Netinstall went well using Jason Antes download of 7.2.0d. Fohdeesha helped me with the QSFQ licensing problem.

No problems using an array of SFP+ modules. Juniper, Cisco and Juniper/Cisco FS.com modules even some unknown 10gbtek all work perfectly. QSFP cisco DACs active and passive both work. Cisco MM and SF modules work. FS.com Cisco compatible DACs worked. Juniper and a few 3rd party DACs and modules did not work!

I have ordered a FS.com Rj45 cisco compatible 10gb optic and will update this when I am able to test it.

With all 4 QSFP and 12 SFP+ running, Kill-a-Watt shows I am pulling 98 watts per VDX 6470. Noise is not that bad, far less than Nexus I have used in the past. I wouldn't want to work with them on my desk but I cannot hear them once I close the door to my homelab.

the 2 VDX 6740 with 2 QSFP DACs for 80gb fabric has been stable for the last 48 hours pushing Iometer between 4 different servers and ISCSI multipathing for my homelab/ home. Vlans / Routing even management configuration has some weird quirks but all worked very well once it was properly created.

Honestly, I have been super impressed, not sure what the hate is for on here. Maybe I should pick-up a recommended ICX to see what I am missing. Still a lot to learn and I think there must be some sort of QOS or services I still need to disable regarding ISCSI traffic.

I doubt I bother moving to a new switch in the next 5 years or so. This does everything I need. Granted I am not using BGP or OSFP or anything else but this powers my ESXI and NAS and home exceptionally well.

Sure, once you have updated and licensed the switch works as advertised but @fohdeesha's earlier reply still holds. https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/brocade-vdx-6740.23248/post-216713 You did state Juniper DACs don't work, correct? I have a Mellanox AOC that works on ICX but not VDX.

Seems like the old VDX group's values and Extreme are made for each other.

When we had these at work, they were uplinked to ICX 7440's via the 40Gb ports (since the 7440's we had were all 40Gb ports) as they were the core. I would say an ICX6610 24 port POE switch would work, or any of the ICX series.

You are correct. The worst part of the VDX switch was Extreme Network. The support is non existent and they were beyond rude on denying me a support account in broken english with refusal to escalate. I am 90% a server guy but I will go out of my way to make sure I do not buy an extreme product simply due to 4 or 5 emails with their support since Friday.

DACs and SFPs I guess I am used to having to hunt and peck. Intel X520s unless flashed are a pain in the butt. HPE/Aruba hates Cisco. Juniper does or does not take 3rd party depending on the switch. the VDX 6470 is probably the most open switch I have used regarding optics.
