Hello STH,

I have recently bought 2 VDX6740 switches from a company that was being liquidated. They were never deployed and were brand new. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these switches. I plan to use upto 10 ports for fiber connectivity across my servers and desktops in a homelab environment . I had few questions and I would be really thankful if someone helped me out with them.

  1. Is there anything specific about this switch that I should know of?
  2. Is it easy to get access to the firmwares.
  3. Will non-brocade SFP+ transceivers work?
  4. Is there any chance of unlocking all of the 48 ports and 4 QSFP ports? My switches appear to have come with only 24 SFP+ ports activated by the base license and none of the QSFP ports activated.
  5. Booting the switch takes really long. I have disable the diag post, but still the switch takes considerably longer to boot. Is it intended or am I missing something?
  6. Finally, the most important Question. Should I keep them or sell them?

I never really liked the VDX line, for a few different reasons. it's incredibly hard to get the firmware, as a brocade/ruckus ex-customer and current customer I can't even get them as the VDX team and product line was obtained by Extreme networks. Last time I used them the VDX was the most picky of any switch I used regarding optics, they would take brocade only. However I saw a report here that someone had no issue with 3rd party optics, so maybe this has changed.

They were also extremely cash-hungry regarding licensing the ports, to unlock the rest you will need to find licenses to do so (good luck). If it were me personally I would sell them, but that's just me :p

the fastiron (ICX, etc) and VDX line were managed and ran by two polar opposite ends of the spectrum at brocade is what I was told, the fastiron guys kind of piled in all the cool shit they could think of and left a lot hidden (like marketing 40gbE ports as "stacking only" but leaving them totally unlocked to use as normal ports) while the VDX team locked the shit out of everything then nickel and dimed you to unlock them

I got a hold of one as well, without any additional licenses. I've been trying to get updated firmware, but unless you have a lot of spare time on your hand and you like to send emails and make calls.. forget it.. they won't give it without a support contract, and they won't sell you a support contract as the product is EOL. If you manage to get it, please share ;) ...

The SFP's seem to be working for me (also non-Brocade) and the SFP direct cables usually work as well (at least between VDX and ICX). Mine is unlicensed as well (so 24 ports only by default) and it's because I could get it dirt-cheap else I would have left it..

The boot time is sooooo freakin' long as it seems to boots a linux environment first and then boot another VM in that environment that runs the switch. So the long wait seems normal.. obviously these switches where designed to just run 24/7 and boot times where not a problem but boy.. they are loud when they boot..

The management btw is a nightmare.. you have to top each command (you can't skip from interface level to vlan for example as you can on the VDX). When you have a VDX and ICX you get annoyed very quickly as the commands seem similar.. but not always are..

The advantage of the VDX over the ICX series is that these support FCOE so you could run your fiber channel SCSI over the ports too.. and even from VDX to VDX (if you have multiple). But if you don't have a fiber channel SAN... I agree with fohdeesha.. stick with the ICX series and see if you can get a 7450 with 2x 40Gb in the back and 4x SFP+ in the front or an older 6xxx series

I paid $100 for both the switches which seemed like a really good price. I got home and upon booting them up, I was a little disappointed that both the switches didn't have any port licenses and I am stuck with 24 ports on both the switches. With that being said, the purchase didn't seem like a really bad deal considering a 24 Port SFP+ 10G switch costs more than $50 for sure. I am definitely thinking of keeping these switches. They are not as loud as I expected they would be. I also picked up a ICX 6450-24P switch which had no licenses along with a FCX648S 48 Port POE switch which came with 2x10G XFP.

It's good to know that third party optics work fine on this switch. At the moment, I don't have any optics to test, but I have a few arriving in the mail. I have managed to get the console up and running along with configuring the management interface access.

I guess FCOE on the other hand requires licenses too. My primary intention is to use these as simple L2 10G switches. I am not really concerned about the firmwares at the moment. It's just a matter of time before someone ends up sharing one. I am more concerned about the dynamic port and feature licenses. I hope someone eventually happens to find out a way to circumvent the licensing considering these switches are already EOL. It's ridiculous to imagine that a capable hardware can be handicapped by restrictive software.

Well, he got it up and working. A lot of trouble (some self inflicted by me I'm sure) with it but he got the licenses and cracked it for me getting a new image on it. Problem is the flash went bad a couple days later! /sigh It still limps along but I have a new CF card coming early this next week. Big thanks to fohdeesha! This thing's been bugging me since last August.

I believe I got this up and running correctly on the new flash card following the instructions from the Extreme page. Got the licenses put back on too. Man did this thing take forever to finish loading the NOS.

Nuts. Still something wrong with this thing. Took 3 hours to boot into a usable state today after doing a cold recovery and then a kernel panic. Grrr.

did you flash the latest 7.4.0a? could be a bug or something, thats the "bleeding edge" version, maybe try flashing a more stable one like 7.2.0

I got mine long time ago and that ownership transition happened so evrything is messed up. It was on the shelf as a backup solution. Mine is VDX6740B EMC dell version. Can anyone share firmware or any guide for unlocking ports? I also have Cisco Nexus no problems with that one evrything unlocked running smooth and takes all possible modules and cables, but this VDX guy is a bit picky.

Please share if you have anything for updating it. Thanks!

Hello, i have a little funny question... Can someone provide me some information about how loud is VDX6740 ? I need to compare with Nexus 6000 for a friend... He thinks Cisco is louder but i am not so sure about that...

If you know how loud a 6610 is, it is quieter than that at idle. Having been around Cisco switches too, I'd say it depends on model. I've been around ones louder and quieter. My 6740 is noticeably quieter than the 6610 I have without the use of a db meter.

As i know there are db meter apps for smartphones... I can try to measure my Nexus 6000 ;) I think about doing video to upload on youtube for comparison as well :)
P.S. Just did a measurement and it is average 77db for N6K-C6001-64P (50cm from switch)
