Um,

Supermicro CSE 846 w X9DRL If 4U 24 HD Bay Storage Server AOC USAS2 L8I | eBay

24 bays. AOC-USAS2-L8i + dual socket X9DRL-iF + rails + redundant 1200w PSUs

I'm thinking this is like the best deal ever. X9 = Sandy Bridge-EP and Ivy Bridge-EP. WHOA!!!!

$80 ship but still at $580 that's amazingly low for a current-ish generation tech.

A norco rpc-4224 is like $450 ( NORCO RPC-4224 Server Case - Newegg.com ). For $130 more, adding a motherboard, rails, redundant power supplies and a sas card is awesome.

The X9DRL-iF is only 4 dimms per processor or 8 total. Still hot IMO

That looks like a great deal. I wonder if it's the JBOD version of the disk backplane or one of the expander-based versions? Since there is one SAS card included, I'm guessing that it's the expander, which is a plus for a basic storage server.

I do not need this at all... but strangely... I do find myself wanting to pick one up. That is an awesome price.

@dba I would guess it is a SAS expander one too. I would also guess (speculation here) that there is a good chance it is a SAS2 not SAS1 backplane since it is a X9 server and has a SAS2 HBA.

This unit also has the newer PWS-1K21P-1R Gold Power supplies which are quieter and more efficient than the older 900 watt variety. I've got two of these cases already and love them.

You can haggle with this supplier. I bought there previous supermicro 24 bay gens they were selling in the spring for $285 shipped when it was listed at $399. If memory servers, I think I made 6 or 7 offers over 3 weeks and they finally just sold me one cheap, lol.

So.. any of you guys in the U.S care to help with shipping one of these over to Sweden via USPS? (.. as Fedex tend to take an arm and a leg in cost) :)

This one is the deal people have been waiting for. I can also vouch for the seller - good guys, honest and fair.

Would be nice to confirm backplane Rev before taking the plunge.

@PigLover - I ordered one. Not sure they are going to still be available by the time I get it and confirm.

Good to know you think this is a decent one too. I know you have an encyclopedic knowledge of past ebay storage chassis pricing.

I sent a message to the seller. We'll see if they answer before they sell out. I don't need one and can't really justify it...but very hard to resist.

Good idea! I got $10 back in ebay bucks and was fine with that. Actually got somewhat burned by a different seller going direct recently (took them 2 weeks to ship... and a company many folks have bought from at STH!) No feedback mechanism is no good.

Wasn't planning to go direct. Just wanted to confirm backplane type.

Seller confirms backplane is sas2-e1. This box is a steal...

so the backplane has a expander?
Yes. Backplane is Supermicro sas2-e1 which means it is a SAS2 (sas-600) expander with a single sff8087 connector providing 4 lanes to your HBA. It also has a second sff8087 for daisy chaining into a second chassis if needed.

This is an excellent solution for spinning disks. Maybe not so much for SSD, but then again who would use a 3.5inch 4u chassis for ssd.

Oh gingersnap! Yea so at $580 this is going to be the deal of the quarter. Drop in a CPU and 4 DIMMs and have a ready-to-go NAS system for well under $1000.

I actually bought this just to replace one of the old norcos. Might get a second now to replace a second norco. No question this is a better value with the SAS2 E1 expander.

BTW - my bet is that with such a small motherboard there is probably a spot for tucking away two SSDs on the Intel controller.

Steal.

Motherboard new is $300+, should be able to unload it fast @ $200 if you don't want it.

PSUs run $175/ea, should be able to unload for at least $100 and run simplex. Or sell both and replace with dual 700 platinum and still come out well ahead.

HBA is $150 new, should sell fast if you already have one.

On the whole you are getting 24 bay Supermicro chassis with SAS2 expander backplane for $200 equiv. Storage chassis deal of the year.

I couldn't resist...I was the 7th sale.

any idea if the SAS SCU port from Intel 602 chipset work with the expander?
