I'm looking at multiple sellers of MZ-ILS3T80 PM1633 SAS SSDs. A few of them explicitly say 512B and others don't. Do these have any known longevity or other issues to be aware of? These are for light home use, so I'm not too worried about them being used. Things I am unsure of:
  • Can they be realigned to 512B or do I need to be careful of that?
  • Is there some 32K hour bug? Is there a date code that marks them as safe? Is the firmware worth flashing?
  • Anything else?
Models I am seeing: MZILS3T8HCJM-000C4, MZILS3T8HCJM-000C3 (I think they are EMC ones? How can you tell?),

I have scoured the forum but am seeing mixed answers to these.

Thanks!
Perry

Yes, PM1633 are affected by the 32k hours bug.
Dell EMC identified them as vulnerable in a service release of their VNX systems.

Quoting Dell:
„MZILS1T9HCHP | MZILS3T8HCJM | MZILS480HCGR | MZILS960HCHP sentenced to death on CQPG, CQPH -> fixed on CQPJ

A fellow member of this forum added firmware CQPJ to his post:

Reformatting from 520 to 512 (and even to 4K) is possible (did this several times with NetApp and Dell EMC branded ones).

Thanks for your response! It sounds like you have rescued a few of these before they die. Would you confidently buy them again (assuming they have not yet hit 32k hours)? Or should I find another SAS SSD model? They do also seem a bit power hungry.

Just to confirm: I would reflash the MZILS3T8HCJM with the CQPJ firmware?

Another quick question: I don't see an EMC logo, but I do see an "EMC P/N" label. Is that the only signifier they are Dell/EMC?

At this point do we have a list of all SSD affected by Hour Bugs?

Seems a # of intels and Samsungs etc are affected.

Unfortunately not, lost my sheet I started in the past. At least several SanDisk from that area are known to be affected as well. Mostly HP ones.

Depends on the use case. Today I surely would go for one or two 30 TB NVME instead 12 4TB SAS. When I bought them SAS was much cheaper than NVME for ~30TB.

Only flash if the ones you get are EMC ones, from their Storage lines. Means: check which firmware they do have and compare with affected versions. In addition to those EMC ones Dell sold 1633 with different firmware for their Poweredge series, firmware for those are easily available

Depends, as written above there exists two versions of PM1633 with Dell EMC branding/firmware. One for the former EMC storage series’s, one for PowerEdge servers.
