so final update, after soldering all those fans, realizing u could just pop the connector out on the bottom and run them that way and save the burnt fingers. anyway as u can see with the 1980s paste flux, i dont get to solder much so...
Careful with old flux. I once used flux for (I think) soldering roof copper drain pipes. Turns out that 1980s dinosaur was a little electrically conductive. It got below an USB connector for an Atmel board and I had to pour alot of isoprop on it and wasted a dozen cotton swabs to get the USB working again.
