1. nobody posted results here with 980. if you experiment, you need an extra power for the card.
2. i think so. but others please confirm.
3. not sure. i don't see it in the bme. but maybe hidden somewhere else.
Update: I installed these fans. Now it is extremely quiet. I almost can not determine if it is on. However, I don't know if cpu temp is cold enough. Is there anywhere to see cpu temp in bios or bmc? Thanks.
the effect of the air shroud is amazing. my good node runs overnight without an issue. still quiet with centos 6.8 just installed. centos 7.2 had issue with video driver and cannot be installed.
In my case, I tried non-ecc ram, full fan speed. Later I found out that airshroud, as previous pages mentioned, is the cause. When I swapped the ram sticks and bios batteries, I did not put on airshroud for convenience, thus the full speed fan noise. I think motherboard has some sensors for...

will 4 noctua 80mm handle this machine well enough?
My unit
BIOS Version:
Core Version: 4.6.4.1
Project Version: S2RQ3A21
Build Date: 3/13/2013
But mine always has jet noise after boot. Will install CentOS 7.3 to see.
crazy goat and stam: could you please post screens on bios versions? i seriously suspect your machines' bios has been updated in some ways by previous users.
thanks, tbkdan. i actually have claimed samsung for both of my nodes each for 128gb. i will try to disable ME in bios first, then try some non ecc desktop ram later.
donjon: i did press the red button on the node and both nodes powered on.
i swapped the ram and coin battery. still the same. the good node is working, the bad node is not starting. now the good node has new problem: after about 5 minutes of post, the fans turn into high mode, very very loud, like jet taking off. no clue.
just did a quick experiment. i swapped the nodes, left to right, right to left. now the right one works with gt620, the left one black screen. so it is node causing the problem, not the backplane. the backplane differentiates the booting sequence, the right one slower, the left one faster. but...
tbkdan: you are right. the two nodes behave differently now (previously with generic riser card both were not starting up). i plug in gt620 to left node and can see the bios booting, but with gt620 on the right node, it is black screen. interesting.
thanks for the help, grfxlab and tbkdan.
i thought of buying another quanta machine with the riser card to see if the original riser card will work.
then i decided to take off the back steel panel of the video card and plug it directly on the 16x pcie slot. with my gt620 card, it works...
