Just to be clear , when you all are asking if this card can be flashed you are trying to flash it to IT mode , correct?

My question is can this card be used as is (i.e. No flashing needed) to set up a raid6 array? (I.e. I don't want to use IT mode)

nice to see 12GB cards going down. Might upgrade for freenas.
Concur but my question is am I really gonna see any benefit for a 8 way (raid 10) stripped mirrors hussl4040ASS600 pool or does my current HBA meet the performance or driving that type of pool.

Doubtful. Under ideal conditions you'd be just over PCIe 2.0 spec. How often do you really hit that threshold?

Technically yes.

From: SAS3008 I/O Controller

  • Deliver more than million IOPS and 6,000 MB/s throughput performance

I doubt you're hitting the 2008 card limit though on IOPs or transfer :) but if you are please show/tell us :) LOL!!

FWIW my 24x S3700 JBOD runs on 3x LSI3008 HBAs.

At this point, for $100 or less I'd go LSI3008 so when 12Gb/s SSD drop in price you're ready as the HGST ones are insanely awesome :) performers.

For RAID cards I'd try
kalleyomalley on eBay
I picked up RS3DC080 for $400 last year ( I offered 1/2 listed price and they accepted straight away)
try offering 1/4 listed price and go through 3 offer process.

PS. Would the Intel RAID cards be hardware locked to Intel motherboards or servers?

I picked up a few of these @ $70 each just now. I didn't have any problems flashing the first two I ordered to the latest Avago firmware/bios using the guide by vorticity_flux and sfbayzfs.

I haven't tested them with actual drives yet (need cables) but everything looked good when I was done flashing.

Any chance you can link the exact guide you used? I don't want to screw it up. Thanks in advance!

Sure. Check out the OP and the post by sfbayzfs further down that deals specifically with this model.

Crossflashing of LSI 9341-8i to LSI 9300-8i. Success (but no SMART pass through)

Here are my notes for when I did the second one:

Code:
M1215 xFlash

Jump J6

* Boot FreeDOS *

sas3flsh.exe -f SAS9300_8i_IT.bin -noreset

* Power Down *
* Remove Jumper *
* Boot FreeDOS *

sas3flsh.exe -o -e 7
sas3flsh.exe -f SAS9300_8i_IT.bin -b mptsas3.rom -b mpt3x64.rom
sas3flsh.exe -o -sasadd 500605BXXXXXXXXXX

* Reboot *
