The have a similar item Intel R2312GL4GS Server System 2U Rack, Socket R, V2 Technology New Bulk starting at $1200. Not sure what the differences are. Specs look pretty much the same. For that I:
First offered $175
They countered $600
I countered $250
They countered $450
I countered $300
They final offered $400 "That is the bottom dollar on this item"
I declined.

For the one I won I:
First offered $250
They countered $400
I countered $325
They accepted.

So I ended up ordering Intel R2312GL4GS Server System 2U Rack, Socket R, New Bulk Packaging. They took a $325 offer. Now I need the rest of the parts. Is the SR0KX stepping the one to get? Can someone point me to RAM options? Is 16 x 8GB sticks that way to go? Is 8 x 16GB that much more expensive? ESXi pass through won't work on the onboard SATA for the VMs right? So I'll still need a couple of HBAs? Anything else I'm missing other than storage to complete this build?
I would go with 8x 16GB

Looks like the one listed at $900 has 1 750w power supply. This one has 2.

Power Supply 750 W
Power Supply Type AC
# of Power Supply Included 1
I think both have only 1 or are you seeing the 2 somewhere else in the description?
I could have been mistaken. The one jmck got for $300 (listed $950) showed to have 2 PS, so I think that's what stuck in my memory.

Interesting though, the one you got was made in China, the one currently listed for $1200 was made in Hungary, so was jmck's. Not sure if they differ in any way.

Yea, as far as I can tell, they are the exact same thing. So I'm not sure why the 2 listings and taking different prices but $325 is still a great deal.

Maybe they're taking less for the 2nd listing because they were packed in 2012 vs 2014? It's still the exact same parts though.

Edit: Maybe the cheaper listing doesn't come with the BIOS update to support v2 chips out of the box?

Ya, those are exactly the 2 things that I suspected. Older package date and V2 is not primarily indicated in the 2nd listing. I'm not sure what the version number difference means.

8 x 16GB PC3L-10600R looks to be around $400 while 16 x 8GB around $250. Any good RAM deals?
Those prices are pretty spot-on in my opinion.

Go with 16GB for faster RAM, lower power usage, and expansion options go with 8GB to save money.

I'm no expert and it's really late and my brain is asleep, but if you have a look at SFF8087 cables they have one connector at one end and four leads at the other end to connect to hard drives. You need to make sure you using the right cable SFF8087 or SFF8088 etc and that they are 'forward breakout' (connector to hard drive) or 'reverse breakout' (connector to backplane).
How exactly does a SAS SFF-8087 breakout cable work? + RAID/connection questions
Thanks your'e absolutly right! found the original cables in a "parts list"

That looks pretty much like my shopping list too. Should be enough to at least get to play with the BIOS settings. Hopefully someone else can chime in if there's something obvious missing.
umm , how do you plan on getting power connector's for harddrives and such, since the PSU doesn't have any, Intel FXX750PCRPS DPS-750XB A 750W Common Redundant Power Supply New System Pull . BTW he instant declines 15$ and instant accept 20$ for the psu.

There's a 6-pin power connector right below the DIMM_A1 / DIMM_A2 slots, it's labeled ODD/SDD_PWR.
It should take a simple 6 pin to sata power cable.

The location is on page 18 and the pinout on page 97 in the Intel document:
http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/sb/s2600gzgl_tps_r2_4.pdf

Thanks for the tip, I was considering lowballing @ 25$, but this is even better ;)

Just wanted to post a bit of a gotcha concerning the Intel server boards with E5-2670 v1 chips. Unless your PCIe cards are on this list. They will run at PCIe 2.0 instead of 3.0 because of this bug.

I didn't read the release notes but Intel hopefully fixed the issue some where between TA recommended FW 02.02.0002 and the current FW 02.06.0002.
