Can anyone provide some leads on a few single socket motherboards (or dual if the price is right) and at least 32GB of RAM for the 2670? I'm thinking about upgrading my all-in-one Proxmox 4.1 host. Thanks!

I just ordered a new X9SRL-F for $268 shipped. It has eight slots which take ridiculously cheap ECC3 RDIMMs.

Thanks! I see I can even get this via Prime. I'm thinking I could just grab a few 8GB dimms like this and be good to go.

Hynix 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-10600R 1333 MHz 240-Pin ECC REG RDIMM HP 500203-061

If you don't mind me asking, did you go for the Supermicro heatsink or something else?

Also, at ~$270 did you consider going with a dual socket board? Something like this one mentioned previously.

Those are 4GB :) ... but they should work. That was part of the appeal of the platform ... gobs of cheap RAM!

I have an AIO cooler (I forget which one) in a Fractal Define XL which I am going to try with this build. I didn't look at dual socket options since I need to keep the form factor to EATX and I have a minimal amount of VMs running, although with more CPU grunt I will definitely add more. I was looking at consumer-grade components for a PVR recording solution, going this route added less than $80 to the project cost and will allow me to consolidate all of my home hardware into a single chassis.

Where would I find "ridiculously cheap ECC non buffered ram" for x9 motherboards?
You have to wade through allot of terribly categorized eBay auctions but deals can be found. I was able to get 96GB 12x8GB ECC Reg DDR3 for sub $200 on best offer 3 weeks ago.

If you're really looking for UDIMMs (non buffered) the answer is "you can't." That's the appeal of "last gen" server platforms - RDIMMs are plentiful and cheap.

I'm seeing (2) 8GB sticks for ~$45 from China (not my ideal choice), or (4) 4GB sticks at the ~$40 range, so doubled would be more like the $80 - $100 total.

I BO $10 per stick
Lot of 13 Hynix 8GB 2Rx4 PC3-10600R Server Memory, HP, ECC ,

$9 per stick
Lot of 5 ECC Server Hynix 8GB 2x4GB 2RX4 PC3-10600R DDR3 1333mhz HMT131R7BFR4C

I had a BO counteroffer at $12 per stick ( 50 sticks total per order ) last week. I been buying it at $10-$11 per 8gb stick.

Just keep an eye on Ebay when you don't need it right away.

Earlier this year, before E5-2670 price collapse, dual LGA2011 cpu board were $100 to low $100 easy picking on Ebay.
I felt "guilty" buying may $100 systemboards that I don't need, hoping the E5 cpu price would collapse.

Thanks, I'll just keep my eyes peeled for best offer sales and wait for the right seller. I would love $100 board prices too :)

1. go to a local auction house.
2. bid on a "lot"
3. bust up lot, take your ram, resell remainder at market on fleabay.

(arbitrage - buy from one market and incur the risk of migrating the goods to another market, holding inventory, and writing off junk)

On a good day between fees and handling costs you might break even.

Or two,

1. Buy 1,000 sticks of DDR3 from large auction at a decent discount
2. install your ram.
3. sell ram on fleabay

(buy in bulk - hold inventory and incur inventory price risk)

and hope you don't lose money if the price drops faster than your margin.

Or three,

Make a bid just under current market and be happy if it is accepts ;)

install ram
(fair market value)

There are occasionally amazing deals on fleabay but there is no saying that you will be the one to win them or that they will be the thing you wish to buy when you want to buy it.

If you have a credit line or cash and your holding costs are low it should be possible to make a few percent on average after costs but the idea of hitting a jackpot on demand seems a bit shaky. .... And then again I could be completely wrong and you may find exactly what you want tomorrow mispelled, miscategorized and almost free.
