Yes. Some applications the fan is better, some want to use single/ double (redundant) chassis fans to cool.

From what one might gather, there are now 5 variants of the X10SDV at this point.
Patrick, do you or will you know if the heatsink is otherwise identical? It would be nice to be able to remove the fan on the original version without fear. I posted the part numbers of the heatsink a few posts back.

Like the looks of that d154004u-rr
Looks like that would be a great AIO board. I see what looks like the sata from the chipset and then two sas connections as well, plus the 2 pcie connectors on the board.

Personally I would prob go with the d15400u4. Looks like it has sfp ports which I am going to guess are 10g, also looks like it has sas or at least addition sata ports onboard on top of the regular 6 sata ports and a couple regular rj45 nics. Means that there would be almost no add on cards needed for my use. Would also guess that the price would be cheaper than the other board once I picked up the additional cards and CPU for it

Yeah, the decision will likely come down to price. You are probably right that D15404u-rr will be less after grabbing the comparable EPC612d4u board, cpu, cooler, and other add-in cards.

The wildcard is the e3 skylake processor and whether it will accept ddr4 rdimms.

ASRockRack haven't updated their website with the new boards yet but they've posted a PDF called "2015 Catalogue" that lists the new boards starting on page 23. D1540D4U-2O looks like it's be the mATX SFP+ one to look out for, unfortunately no sign of any from the D1540D4I range coming with SFP+ ports... copper only.

For those wondering here is the X10SDV lineup as of now:

Supermicro X10SDV series as of August 2015.jpg
I do have a bunch of pics/ info on non-SM boards I have been asked not to share, but for whatever reason they are not shipping in quantity. From what I gather, big guys like FB get a lot of chips and other hyperscale stuff (Moonshot). Outside of that SM seems to be the only vendor still able to ship en masse.

The D-15x0 models are on pages 33-34 (S-28-S29), seeing 6 models listed.

Mini-ITX (4x USB3.0
D1520D4I - base model
D1540D4I - D1540 variant of the base model
D1540-D4I-2T - D1540 + dual Intel X557-AT2 (Dual 10GB Base-T)

Micro-ATX (minus one USB3.0 internal header and add one PCIe 3.0 x8 slot when compared to the mini-itx)
D1540D4U-2L - base model
D1540D4U-2T8R - Intel X540 (dual 10GB Base-T), LSI 3008 controller (2x mini SAS!) (linkage)(Linkage #2)(Linkage #3)(Linkage #4)
D1540D4U-2O - Intel CS4227 (dual 10GB SFP+)

So if you want SFP+, there's only one model available. Will be interesting to see what price points they have with these when they are available.

IMO AsRock should have been shipping the D1540 boards by now, all of the components have been available for months unless SuperMicro paid $$$ to have a first to market exclusivity deal.

I don't think the SuperMicro boards are even available in the UK yet - haven't seen them at any of the usual computer retailers. They've been an import-only ebay option with the ludicrous price premium to match. Can't be sure of the specifics behind the poor availability of Xeon D but given Intel's problems with the 14nm node I am full expecting the D's to be supply-constrained.

Edit: Seen lambdatek have got the X10SDV-TLN4F recently... a snip at only £825. Le sigh.

Sadly no-one seems to be bringing out a D1520 with 2x10Gb (either copper or SFP+) which was my personal hopeful for a wonder-NAS board. Maybe in a year or two.
