To move these, we'd really like to see some use specs or statements about overall health

ive been looking for 8-12x large enterprise SSDs (sas / sata only) , im constantly surprised by how frequently i see U.2 NVMe drives at a the same or lower prices than the same size, same class (enterprise) SAS drives.

that has to say something.
(example @ $245 shipped: WD Ultrastar DC SN630 3.84TB PCIe Gen 3.1 x4 U.2 NVMe 2.5" Enterprise SSD USED | eBay
or another example @ $199 and is a HGST! here: https://forums.servethehome.com/ind...343-ultrastar-3-82tb-u-2-199-obo.38482/unread
1 last example, 7.98t nvme u.2 at $575 OBO: P4510 8TB Intel SSD Series DC NVME U.2 2.5" SSDPE2KX080T8 Solid State Drive | eBay )

Yeah, it makes me sad too. If I had been a little more patient with buying my rig, I probably could have afforded something with enough slots for U.2s to be feasible for me too. And if you narrow down to SAS 12Gb/s, you pretty much are always higher costs for the same storage...

u.2 and u.3 nvme cages/server are rare, your lucky if you have 4 ports, superlucky/expensive at 8, and any more is $$$$$$$$$

on the other hand, 24 drive sas enclosure is CHEAP

at larger capacity. nvme is quite often 50% of the price of sas, ironicly performance is quite often better on the sas than lots of nvme models since filesystems cant really use the queues right etc, and sas gives you dual path

So - I am building up my first home lab and I found this chassis, a Supermicro SC 216, with 2 PSU (albeit 48V DC PSUs) for $80 with free shipping

comes with a 24 drive 2.5” SATA3 /SAS? backplane and an X8 dual motherboard (both of which I plan to re-sell). I haven’t decided on if I’ll buy a 48V DC UPS or just get new PSUs for $40 a pop.

The plan is to buy this NVME backplane (BPN-NVMe3-216N-S4) for $400 new (Supermicro BPN-NVMe3-216N-S4 24-port 2U (SC216/219) NVMe direct-attac). It is 20 NVME plus 4 NVME/SATA3/SAS3 drives.

The final piece of the puzzle is an H11/H12 Supermicro board, 1 or 2 second gen EPYC CPU’s, and some pcie bifurcation cards to make it all go brrrr for under $2000 before drives and only $500 for the chassis.

that backplane is a unicorn from something thrown away, your not allowed to order a new backplane without sending old back, not getting them separate

it says nvme3, but guessing gen4 will probably work

ist worth the effort, that gen case you are looking at, is older than the backplane though, so might require some bracketry

Study spec/datasheets, look for product numbers for the desired sku(s). Then setup ebay alerts for these product numbers and wait.
Instead of product numbers you can also use more generic terms that will have varying (mostly bad, occasionally pretty awesome) results.
this. :)

Sorry, I’m new to the game - do you mean when you order from Supermicro? I mean, I’m happy to send my old backplane from this chassis back if I have to, but wiredzone.com that I linked has them in stock for $400 new; no mention of sending old one back….

May be true, but when I look on SM’s website at the old 24 drive backplanes it doesn’t appear that there were any compatibility issues replacing the old sas2 backplanes with newer sas3 ones, so all the mount points should work. Will lyk

think you misunderstood, thats from a recycler, so you can buy it, but good luck getting it as even a supermicro dealer, so grab it while you can! or .. I will! :p

as for fitting, I think it will fit, but you might have to improvise a bit, but its definetly a cool project!

Thanks! I just pulled the trigger on it! Comes with a 3 year warranty and 120 day overnight replacement from them, so I figure it’s low risk.

The chassis at $80 shipped seemed like a great deal - even if there is some fiddling with it because it’s several generations old that’s still 50lbs of metal shipped.

Any experience with 48V DC PSUs? Am I better off buying some new 1U 920W PSUs?
