Hello,

I'm looking for upgrade my HP Z620 workstation with some 4x BNIB HP 300GB 6G 15K 2.5 DP SAS HDDs.

These HDDs are HP P/N 627114-002 and their model is EH0300FBQDD.

My plan is to install an IcyDock ExpressCage MB324SP-B and setup them in a single RAID0 array for VHD storage - these are essentially for LAB purposes so data and downtime are not really important since all storage will be backup'ed with StorageCraft ShadowProtect to NAS.

Main goal is the fastest read/write possible without breaking the pocket.

To achieve this I'll need a SAS controller and these are the HP approved options for Z620:
LSI 9217-4i4e 6Gb/s controller - LSI SAS2308/ Fusion MPT 2.0
LSI 9270-8i SAS 6Gb/s ROC - LSISAS2208 Dual-Core RAID on Chip (ROC)

I know there are some best deals around with some SAS controllers and others being possible to be flashed and unlocked for some features.
I'm feeling a bit confused about what is "the deal" on SAS controllers atm and what should I look before buying the IcyDock cage, SAS cables and the controller itself to be sure that everything will be compatible.

Could someone give me some tips?

Thank you!

-- Edit
In the future this IcyDock ExpressCage will allow me to swap these 4x SAS HDDs to larger SSDs so would be important that the controller could make his magic with SSD drives too. :)

M1015 is still the best deal around?

If you are looking for HBA, you may want to look at HP H220 as another option. They are SAS 2308 based controllers (9207-8i/9205-8i) and can be had for under $50

Hello,

I've been reading about H220 and seems an interesting option.

For the same price range is there some option for a RAID controller with memory cache/battery?

P410 can be found at an interesting price with 512MB + battery however it's PCIE 2.0 yet.

Thanks
