do these work in supermicro boards with any bios? I currently have an intel ES QL1K Platinum working, wondering if this will work as well if I add the correct microcode to the bios - @RolloZ170 do you know?
the P-8124 B1 and 8124M H0 are 240W TDP processors and don't start on standard supermicro boards ( X11DPU-Z+ can run them )
there is a VRM controller chip upgrade required.
if you have a ASRock Rack EPC621 boards just add the MC and it runs.
Gigabyte MU71/MD71 can run the P-8124 without BIOS mod.

If you want something that is practically the same as the 8124, but will work in any board, the Gold 6139 is the best choice. Same 18C/36T, but base clock is 2.3, boost to 3.7. 135W. It works in any Purley board too. I have the SR3G3 version, works great. Even works in a Dell 7820 system with no issues. I bought it for $375 US in Summer 2020.
I have stayed away from the 8124 since its compatibility is problematic, and the TDP is through the roof. The 8124 might be a bit faster on some things, but, not worth the hassle for power, and finding a board that can manage it's finickiness.
I've run off roadmap E5 V2 and similar CPU's in the past. So far, for the Intel Scalable world, the 6139 is the best I have seen.

Thank you. I was looking at the same processor actually. Its for a friend actually who is using a ql1k but single clock speed is slowing him down.
I actually was able to score a gold 6148 retail that someone priced as an ES processor but I noticed via the pictures it was a retail version!

It's a H0 stepping. If you look online, avoid the QMTN. That's a ES stepping. You can tell in the picture. If you see the 6139 on the label it's either a QS or Retail version. The version I have does not have any of the ES marking in the CPU Name string when I run CPU Z on the machine. It's a "retail" 6139, as far as off-roadmap CPU's go.

In my experience, The QS typically works with any board. I know when I was researching the Intel Scalable's and finding cheap CPU's, that these typically work in anything, including Intel boards. Intel boards, typically block ES chips. The QS versions are identical to retail. If the have the label, in many cases, these are samples that manufactuers have used for validations or Intel gave out as gifts, etc. It's not uncommon for Intel to give out QS CPU's to large computer companies. There's no way to tell on the CPU lid between retail or QS typically. If it has "Confidential" it will likely not workon HP's, Dell's, etc. Only select BIOS will run those. I have SM and HP/Dell workstations, and my different CPU's work. I have a QS 8156, works just fine in my HP workstation I'm using now.
I used to worry when firmware updates come out of them being blocked. 3 years of ownership, and no issues, so, I think its fine. Much better than the Bronze CPU that this originally came with.

all regular QS are marked with Intel Confidential too. to say only the confidential do not work is not true.
the P-8124 & 8124M draws only 240W(@2900mhz) continious at heavy AVX512 loads.
at cinebench R20 i.e. it clocks at 3300-3400mhz all cores with 200-205W watts package power.
my suggestion is to check ebay and the sales forum here for people selling these processors (or others)

you can get one cheaper on taobao if you know how to buy there(please don't ask me)
