Hi,

I want to run two U.2 SSDs (currently Samsung PM1733 1.92TB for testing, later bigger ones) on my Supermicro X12STL-F using two Delock 90081 adapters. My problem is that the SSDs only work in slot 6. Neither slot 7 nor slot 5 work. The SSDs stay completely cold in these slots. My BCM57404 NIC works in these slots. The SSDs both have the same problem and they work in at least two other systems using both PEGx4 and standard x8 slots. The only pattern I see is that both problematic slots are those narrow ones I never saw before PCIe gen4. While the other systems I used the SSDs/adapters in are gen3, forcing the slots of the X12STL-F down to gen1 does not work.

Any ideas? Known compatibility problems?

if you have a Pentium slot 7 is not usable.
I know. I have a Xeon 2356G and the NIC works in slot 7.

i see no voltage regs on it. seems that the U.2 SSD is powered with the lower voltages which are weaker on slots 7 & 5.
Is there a difference between those slim gen4x8 slots and a "standard" gen3x8 slot? As I wrote the SSD/adapter combo works in the latter one.

here is a similar issue different motherboard
he found out that different U.2 adapter works
Unfortunately the Startech adapter that works on the Asrock board looks very similar to my Delock 90081. Is it worthwhile to try it nonetheless? Or would you suggest a different one (regarding the voltage regulation)? Is there a chance a Delock 90482 combined with an CBL-SAST-0956 (already have the cable) reliably works at gen4? At least 5V and 12V would come directly from the PSU (knowing you said the problem could be the lower voltages).

just a guess, a x16 slot PEG can deliver 75W, other x4 x1 not per specs. instead otherwise noted by the vendor.

that will get a clue where the issue realy is.

i cant find a real picture of the startech card. if there is a VR unit and the the Delock has not this must be the difference.

i see there is another Delock 90051 U.2 with x16 interface and VoltageReg unit on the card.

there is no difference, strange

Some info on the status quo:

The Delock 90051 does not fit because the problematic slots are not open ended. I feel bad for not noticing this, but fortunately the adapter came to me already damaged, so I sent it back for refunding.

The Delock 90482 kind of worked and I even got a working link at PCIe 4.0 on first try, but after rebooting there was no link at all. Could be the adapter, could be the cable I had problems with already in the past.

Fortunately I gave the Delock 89469 a chance as well and although it is extremely similar to the Delock 90081 it works perfectly well until now! The machine was running for a few hours only, so this is pretty preliminary.
