I'm looking for a -24i SAS2/3 HBA - Non RAID, preferably LSI - but not MegaRaid, so 9205-24i or 9305-24i, but willing to consider other options. Need it with full height bracket.

Anyone ?

Newegg just had a pretty good sale on the 12gb/s sas3 24i from LSI for around 400.

M5210 (8i) which natively supports JBOD can be had for under $60. So for $180 you can have 24i @ 12gbps; although this config needs 3 slots and not feasible if the available pcie slots is a constraint

Yeah, I looked at at -16i + -8i, but only have the one available slot.

@Kingmer - thanks for the heads up on NewEgg - I'll take a look.

Hmmm I didn't even know there were LSI, Avago, Broadcom or whatever the hell they are called now, non Megaraid HBA's or RAID cards... What's your reasoning behind not wanting one?

@natelabo The card is going into a SuperMicro rig I use to mine BurstCoin - a crypto that mines with hard disk space rather than CPU/GPU. The current card is one of the MegaRaids, and when it's working properly it'll mine at about 1,200 MB/sec. However when it's being a PITA it'll only mine at ~ 200MB/sec. After 40-50 restarts of the miner it'll kick back into "proper" mode and get the 1,200 MB/sec. The second card in it is a 9201-16e, and it consistently does 1,600 - 2,000 MB/sec. Lifes to short to have to restart the miner 40-50 tines to get the proper performance, so I want to replace the MegaRaid with a straight HBA.

Just saw this:

SAS 9305-24I HOST ADAPTER | eBay

EDIT: Not quite sure what that cable is hanging off of it, looks to be a 8643 minisas-hd to 8087 quad splitout so 16 drives suppported off that one minisas-hd port...tell me it isn't so other wise that'd be a total of 96 drives w/out an expander in the mix using that type of cable if my eyes do not deceive me).

Though it'd be 8643 -> 8087 x's 6 to get 24 devices going but maybe that is some fancy cable I am not aware of.

@whitey isn't that just a SATA breakout cable with nice latching SATA connectors? The later pictures in the listing you linked give more detailed views.

May be it was a long week or Friday Happy Hour started little early for @whitey. [emoji483][emoji481]
That cable appears to be standard 8643 - 4xSATA. So six of those cables to 24 drives. Not sure where 96 drives came into the calculation.
