What I am currently planning

Hallway

Fiber in at door (1000 down 500 up)

  • Router (TP-Link Wireless Router Archer AX50)
    • WIFI (devices generally able to get 300 to 600 down and 200 up)
      • Roommate gaming PC (They are not interested in getting wires for their setups)
      • Roommate gaming 2 PC
      • Assorted devices like cellphones, a Chromecast etc. (roaming)
    • Wired (Wire length 20 metersish)
      • Wire into my room to a switch (recommendations for switch wanted potentially with WIFI? For a better WIFI in my room for non wired devices)
        • OptiPlex 7000 (i7) home lab start already got this for free so this is where I will start OS up in the air I was thinking some sorta Linux with docker/kubernetes but I am open to suggestions.
          • Jellyfin (I would like this to be available to everyone on the network)
          • Pi-hole (This should block adds on the entire network)
          • General file storage
          • Potentially editing Davinci Resolve project on server from PC or MacBook I realize this might add to much cost? With regards to having fast enough local speed for 4K footage and timeline scrubbing.
          • Small self hosted web projects
          • Potential home automation stuff with homekit or some such not looked into this much.
          • If not a switch with WIFI then something that can make a WIFI network for my room
          • Smart plugs for power monitoring & being able to turn things on and off potentially also smart lights what is the best bang for buck here? And what is the most secure should it be on its own WIFI?
        • Any other suggestions or considerations?
