You can see the 8x PCIe 3.0 4-lane connectors on the rear of the chassis. External PCIe cabling.

Apologies for the tardy response. I did not sleep on the plane and the satellite WAN for Wi-Fi was not working on the United 777 en route from Taipei so I am both poorly rested and behind on work. Not a good Friday combo.

Hi Patrick,
no problem, hopw you find some sleep and get more important things done.
I see the connectors and wonder what to put on the other side.
They look like sff8644, so maybe two 9400-8e or a single 9405W-16e per Storage Head ?

They are probably using the physical sas connectors , but using PCIe pass through cards.

@_alex they usually do not need a controller like the LSI cards. Instead, they typically use a PCIe retimer card to go from a slot to external cabling. Dell, Supermicro and others do this as well.
