HI,

I am looking to play with a GPU that's capable of supporting multiple virtual desktops. Looks like Nvidia vGPU is the way to go, but there seems to be licensing or unlocking involved and proprietary Nvidia driver. Are there any other alternatives that enable sharing a GPU with multiple VMs that is simpler?

Preferable a GPU that doesn't require any extra power connections. I looked at GTX1030 low profile, for example. It is an inexpensive low profile card, but then there's the whole unsupported unlocking mess to deal with.

I use Proxmox and am looking fro basic desktop usage, office applications. No gaming or any taxing things. I am finding that virtual desktop video support in enterprise servers is severely lacking. I.e. try watching YouTube over RDP in an enterprise server hosted VM versus any desktop and there is a world of difference.

Thanks

on amd side of things v620 is there with rocm that supports sr-iov but no user actually bought it - and there's concern there's no drivers for public - and that rocm won't provide them - but i'm not sure.

intel integrated sr-iov support (no support at this time for pcie intel gpu's)

No unlocking required, but you would need your own lic server 'unlocking'
A5000 (ampere) supports vgpu ~ can be sniped for 1300 usd
RTX6000 bit more expensive but also supports vgpu. ~ can be sniped for 1400 usd

vifo / open-iov that can pass flags from hardware gpu into virtual 3d accelerated gpu's. (then just use parsec or moonlight)

A2000 doesn't use any power connectors - delivers quite good performance ~ there are 3rd party single slot heatsink
A2000 ada delivers quite good performance ~ there's 3rd party single slot heatsink

A4000 requires single 6 pin power, performance is really good ~ heatsink is bad - runs hot, but its single slot
