WDTV Live/Live Plus- great product, effectively took the concept of the popcornhour and got it out to the masses at BestBuy. When it comes to codec support, network streaming, etc, it works great.

Until January 17th when Western Digital released the "final firmware update" for the WDTV Live and WDTV Live Plus, v1.06.43/v1.06.42 respectively. This "final firmware update" which you have no way to have the box stop nagging you about until you apply it - has completely destroyed SMB network browsing without resetting the network connection via changing the workgroup or ip-address manually each time you want to use it, which my wife would be completely unwilling to do.

WD TV Live Firmware & Networking - Western Digital Community for more information, but if you haven't upgraded yet - DONT. It is possible to downgrade firmware, but we shouldn't have to put our (out of warranty) device at risk of bricking to get a working unit.

So I'll be looking at the little Atom based media players and XBMC a lot more in the next few days
