Time for Moar storage and so this time i was thinking of getting used Ultrastars off ebay vs buying new HGST NAS drives - price wise around $100 or so for 4TB ultras vs around 130-140 if on sale at the egg for 4TB HGST NAS drives. Leaning towards the ultras they are enterprise grade so should be pretty solid. I've been buying HGST NAS for the most part until recently when I bough a couple of 6tb heliums HGST used and they're pretty solid. Anyway thoughts?

Tough choice, they are both good disks. If you need to tweak for the lowest power usage and quietest operation, the NAS disks are a decent option, but the Ultrastars will be a better choice if you have density, they are better equipped to deal with vibration in larger arrays, plus they are designed with heavy enterprise workloads in mind. Overall performance is also a little better on the Ultrastars imho. They are a little louder in use I reckon, but there's not much in it between the two. If it were my choice and they were both about the same price, I would go for the Ultrastars :)

Thanks!

I grabbed a 4tb Ultrastar for 99.95 from ebay this morning. Just did one for now as i really want to score more 6TB heliums on the cheap like before.

Where are these 4TB Ultrastars for $99.95 on ebay? I'm finding 3TB for $69 to $99.

HGST was bought back in 2012 by Western Digital and yes :D

(I think ultrastar is a bigger name for enterprise storage devices than the different wd names)
