So my monster build from 2016 has served me well but I think it's getting time to upgrade?!?

My 3u server is running an E3-1241 V3 on a X10SL7-F motherboard. It's got 32gb of RAM and about 100TB of storage.

Running ESXi
  • PfSense
  • app server
  • emby/plex
  • storage NAS
Not a bunch of things but I've noticed with emby trying to transcode 4k material is starting to give it trouble. Even just streaming high bitrate 4k is giving it some issues.

With that all in mind, is it time to upgrade and what would people suggest if so?

Have the space to add a decent GPU? That will give you MUCH better benefits than a new CPU/mobo at this point. Only way around that is to get a newer CPU with Intel QuickSync capability but the $500 you'd spend could go to a Quadro P2000/P2200 and you'll have a much easier time with transcoding.

Maybe... I didnt htink I could add a GPU to a server like this but I guess why not. I could add a small GT1050 or something that would have h.265 decoding capability... Intel quicksync is only for 264 from my understanding.

If can fit a 2 slot card then the 1650 Super or 1660 are amazing at transcoding for the cost.
Make sure it's the super version of the 1650 so that it has the Turing chip set.

If you want to go as cheap as possible then the nvidia P400 is great and only costs $80 or so.

Just depends how many simultaneous transcodes you need :D
