Does anyone have any experience upgrading an Adaptec raid card (within the same series). Ie I currently have an Adaptec 8405 ( Adaptec's 1 x SFF-8643 "miniSas" 12gbit card) and want to upgrade it to a 8805 ( Adaptec's 2 x SFF-8643 "miniSas" 12gbit card) , same card just 2 x 8643 ports vs 1 x ).

I know the proper procedure is to backup all data before doing this, but the data isnt super valuable. I aware im taking a risk, just looking to see if anyone has any experience doing this or something similar.

It will simply be a swap of the 8405 for the 8805.

I do have a 36 port Intel SAS3 expander connected to the 8405 (this setup has been working great for over a year now), so one SFF-8643 port of the 8805 would go to the expander, the 2nd SFF-8643 port would go to a fan out cable and 4 x new Hitachi SSDs im looking to add to the mix.

Im hoping to *not* have to move all the data and re-create the current arrays on the 8405 card, so if anyone has any input or experiences please post. I'm also posting this same question to Adaptec's support , and will update this thread once i hear back from them.
Thanks!

Hi,

I just reconnected drives between Adaptec 3405, 31605, 5805 and IBM ServeRAID 8k and array was found withou any problem. You just need to accept new configuration.

Hi,
to update this thread, i had no issues at all dropping in the 8805 card in place of the 8405 card. I simply had to accept the "Foreign" configuration of arrays on the first boot up with the new card in (this part was expected), and all of my arrays across 28 disks showed up great!

thanks

Sorry I was out of town for this. Generally this is a straightforward update. The cards are made to be replaced with the same family of cards in the event of a failure.
