The M5104 has 256MB of RAM cache onboard. You would need a BBU to use it as write cache but still can help for read patterns with no BBU. The other big difference is that it is a proper RAID controller instead of a HBA.
What about OS choice? I've seen some suggestion of using Windows 8 as a replacement for WHS, but I now see there is Windows Storage Server 2012, I'm thinking this might be a better alternative to using Windows 8?
