I wondering if people might help me with something I'm trying to make. There are 5G mmwave cards available now which present a new twist to what are typical solutions. 5GUWB/mmWave goes past 5gbps that USB supports. I am trying to use the Quectel RM530N-GL (not the 520) 5G/UWB card.

After much research The BananaPi RP4 is a router, has dual 10gb, and has 1 m.2 b key (which is what the Quectel card is) and 2 mini pcie slots.

The BananaPi board however uses the USB 3 protocol on its m.2 vs the miniPCIe protocol. The Quectel card can do either USB or mPCIe.

USB 3/3.1 gen 1/USB 3.2 Gen 1x1 (so gd annoying) maxes at 5gbits. It also has higher latency. A single PCIe 3 lane gets you 8gbits. The quectel supports up to 7gbits of mmwave connectivity.

There is an adapter from Gateworks called the GW16147 and it has the feature of speaking PCIe on its m.2 b key interface.

So technically on paper, this should all work but then I thought 'hmm, this is so specialized (although it shouldn't be) that maybe a mini pc would be better.'

Anyone ever come up with something like this? To put it in perspective, VZW wants 45/mo for their internet gateway which doesn't do anything more than 1gbit. You can add a 'modem' card like it's a laptop or tablet to your account and for all of 15bucks/mo (based on my existing plan), I get all the 5GUWB I can consume. I happen to live close to a UWB tower. I'm sure if I used it as my primary, they might get after me, but it would sure make an awesome (and cheap monthly) high speed backup internet.

So, if my proprietary solution with bits found on the net won't work, what would be a good mini ATX solution for this? Anybody know of any existing solutions to get the super high speed 5g data?

Are these wwan modules only available as m.2 b key?

a nice firewall/router system is this supermicro that has enough expansion to add the wwan in and still have 10gbps interfaces.

based on this motherboard

Are there 5g uwb wwan modules with external antenna connections?
Yes, I am trying to use the Quectel RM530N-GL. and yes, it needs a antenna module, but the days of simple coax connectors are no more with mmwave. The module needed is a QTM545 which is a fully active antenna module. Power, signalling, etc needs to happen between the 530N and the QTM545. This is not trivial :(

The motherboard is super close, but the there needs to be an m.2 b key interface to handle the modem. I'm trying to do this myself, so I'm not looking at solutions I need to solder, etc.

ah makes sense, I lost track of ability to convert from M key to B key (did I get that right?!). I got turned around looking at these adapters.

If there are PCIe to B key adapters could you make that work in 1 of the 2 PCIe x8 slots?
