The D-1520 has been around that price for a while. Check the benchmarks and confirm you're getting the performance you need.

Also, it's MiniITX, with 1 PCIe slot, so your expansion options are limited.

That is what I would expect the price to be. There are no gigabit NICs (to save on costs.) You may want those if you are using older OSes e.g. from pre-September-November last year or else you are going to have to side load the drivers.

Second, they are D-1520's. We have the D-1518 and will have a review next week. 4C/ 8T. We also have the 6C/12T D-1528 in the lab. The D-1518 and D-1521 will be replacing the D-1520 in the next few weeks.

Here is the Supermicro X10SDV-4C-TLN2F review for your reference.

All this is true fellas..I get it...but I never saw even the 1520 at this price...unless I missed something.

The problem with Xeon-D is it's never been cost effective...expecially with external 10Gb NICs so cheap now...

The D-1520's price from Intel is about 1/3rd of the price of a D-1540. Figure there is ~$380 saved from the lower end processor and $20 from the lack of onboard 1GbE.

Has it always been that cost then..just curious? I thought I looked at both before and they weren't too far off.

I remember them being just under $500 maybe $498. So this is about $9-10 cheaper than I remember.

Edit - just saw the conclusion of the review linked above:
With the Supermicro X10SDV-4C-TLN2F we have a very interesting set of capabilities. We lose an active cooler, two gigabit Ethernet ports via an Intel i350-am2 and most notably 4 cores and 8 additional threads. On the other hand, that saves about $400 off of the motherboard’s price. Expect street pricing in the $470 range once supply picks up. Putting that in perspective, an Intel X540-t2 dual port 10Gbase-T adapter costs over $500 new. Or a low end 4 core/ 8 thread Xeon E3 plus motherboard is probably $350-400. From a value perspective, these are extremely strong.
$489 is more expensive than $470 but Within 5% i'd say is within range.

Ahh...for some reason I thought I saw these at like $700....sorry about the post fellas.
I am sure when released they were like $700 also but I guess below $500 is the stable price, not bad kit for that money really.

There are a few sellers who sell the boards a few weeks earlier at greatly inflated prices. That is when you see something that should sell sub $500 sell for $700.

Excited to see what the 1528 brings after seeing the 1518 review Patrick! The lab rack WAF is not looking good right now. May need to sell it all and go with a quiet 3-4 node ITX solution on a wire frame rack. Only problem now is I need SFP+...doh...lol.
