I'm looking at synology DX1215.
Does someone use it without a synology nas (with an hba ) ?
I'm looking for the best way to expand my storage but can't use a rack.
The dx1215 appears to have the best form factor for my use case but i read nothing about using it with "conventionnal" hba.
For the record my "server" is an hp Z620.

Do you need 12 drives? If you could get away with 8 drive u-nas has some pretty solid cases that work well for DAS boxes.
It would be about 1/4 of the cost building it yourself vs buying it prebuilt (even though you'd have to pickup a control board and some internal components).

Grab one of those NSC-8XX cases, a 1U PSU , supermicro jbod power controller board (theres some for sale on the forums here for cheap~$25), 2x 8087 breakoutcables, and a dual 8087->8088 (or 8643->8644) pcie adapter and you should be in business ~ total cost of about $325 with shipping.
