Apologies, my bad on 'with' vs 'without ETH'. I need to work on my reading comprehension;).

The wish was father to the thought

Sounds like a cheap 1:1 translation - is that a common proverb in english? Actually had to look that up:p

As far as I remember that was already discussed - That is likely "scam" (because Mellanox is no longer selling licenses), i.e. the seller is selling license keys he generated himself, but not official licenses.

It's easy to generate a license yourself, there are several members (including me) who would probably help you obtain a license for free...

If you only want to use Ethernet and 10G, it might be more sensible to go with one of the Brocade switches (There's a huge topic in the Networking forum)

Yes that adapter will convert qsfp+ to sfp+.

Question is, why limit to 10g when old CX3 cards are $30 or less and provide way higher speed.
Sure if you got older stuff or no x4/8 slot left or need Base-T , but else?

good question, I guess oyu mean something like this? MCX354A-QCBT MELLONAX CX354A CONNECT-3 QDR DUAL PORTS QSFP PCIe 3.0 ADAPTER | eBay (but presumambly you think that's over priced?)

so I could just get this switch, get a bunch of nic's like those, a bunch of direct attach cables and be future proofed (home lab wise) for a long time in my home rack for relatively cheap? (+ the ability to actualy drag fiber in the future to different locations?

or perhaps this would be the better buy Mellanox CX354A MCX354A-QCBT QDR IB 10GbE Dual-Port QSFP w/ SAS Expander | eBay (though unsure why I would need the sas expander?)

Yep.

Mellanox ConnectX-3 gives you 40G (QDR) with standard 40G QSFP+ cables and 40G FDR10 (less overhead) with 100G (at least Mellanox branded, haven't tried any other brand) cables.

In opposite to other vendors, Mellanox switches are also not picky about transceivers or cables, except when it comes to 56G.

Only downside: If you want 56G FDR, you need genuine Mellanox cables and / or optical transceivers..

100G cables only give you FDR10 anyway :p

Standard QSFP+ cable -> 40G QDR
Mellanox (possibly other brands too) 100G QSFP28 cable -> 40G FDR10 (less overhead compared to QDR)
Mellanox 56G FDR QSFP+ cable -> 56G FDR (Ethernet and Infiniband! Both have a Mellanox specific 56G mode)

so there is FDR14 (for 56G) and FDR10 for 40G with less overhead? But FDR10 has higher cable requirements?

ok, I think you talked me into it. However, as I'm in Israel, going to have to see if my father is up for a project to test things out in the US before this is put on a container for me to Israel (have 2 DL380p g8's heading his way, so should have a testbed for testing.

You sure should be able to find a Mellanox switch in Israel, just need to haggle a bit.
Its (used to be) an Israelian company after all :)

Kind of.
FDR uses a 64b/66b encoding in opposite to QDR which uses a 8b/10b encoding, so FDR is naturally more efficient.
However, 40G QSFP+ is generally QDR, so the electronics inside standard 40G QSFP+ cables only reports QDR in its capability list, so the card decides to use QDR.
100G, in opposite, is FDR, so the card decides to use FDR, but with a reduced data rate of 10G per lane (even though the cable technically supports more), because the cable needs to have a special coding (basically a license) that unlocks 14G FDR.

I haven't tested Mellanox 100G Infiniband cables yet (Mellanox has 100G Ethernet and 100G Infiniband cables), but at least for Mellanox 100G Ethernet cables, you only get FDR10.

(at least that's my theory and experience. I'm very interested in testing and verifying this further)

As far as I remember, there were also pretty cheap offers from Israel! Just keep your eyes open.
Also there's a good stock of other Mellanox hardware in Israel sometimes.
