Sorry about that, I see that in the link title now. When I looked at it, I saw it on my phone and read the description which showed:

Notes: The server chassis was pulled from a working environment. No testing was performed. No manuals, cords/cables, or additional items are included if not listed or shown.
Included:
  • (1) Supermicro CSE-216 24-Bay 2U server chassis
  • (1) Supermicro SAS216A backplane
  • (1) SuperMicro PWS-721P-1R 720W PSU
  • (3) Nidec UltraFlo V80E12BHA5-57 cooling fans
That's an amazing deal if it does include the trays as well.

Out for delivery on the UPS truck, I shall know w/in a few hours if the drive trays/caddies are included/arrive (fairly confident they are as I exchanged e-mails w/ seller confirming already).

I asked, they're included.

I wish it had an expander backplane.

Slap in a res2sv240 and you're set right! May have to make some sort of custom mounting bracket if you don't wanna chew up a PCI express slot. I Assume that is what I will do w/ my last spare sas expander a lot of us got here on the cheap a couple months back. Then again on second thought that sounds like a magnificent IO/throughput bottleneck since this is mainly targeted at SSD drives (guess you could throw in 2.5 magnetic's but really why?) so 3 HBA's or a 16 port version may be in order.

Damn it, based on the shipping location these guys are about 10 minutes from me. I wonder if they'd do Will Call.

EDIT - Bah, didn't notice it was for 2.5" drives.

Bet they would, the lady I talked to seemed very helpful, call them up and hope for the best. I'd imagine it save's them $ as well on ship so it can't hurt to inquire.

I just have a bunch of random 2.5" I thought this would make a nice JBOD chassis for, but going from an EXT raid card I'd need 3 in my haed and I don't have room for FusionIO, multiple raid cards, USB card, gfx card.... if only I had an 848+4P system LOL!!! Then, just then I may have enough PCIE slots, LOL!!

if the price is right I may snag 1 though we'll see :D

Short answer: non expander, sas2.

Long answer: The listing is not clear on that, but a close examination of the photos in the listing shows the backplane as 'sc216A'. This is a non-expander backplane using 6x8087 connectors. The sc216A backplane never shipped in a sas1 version. The 2u SFF sas1 backplanes only shipped in the 'TQ' version with individual sas/sata connectors.

ok. That means need a sas expander for this.

As long as seller said included in pm...this must include 24 trays.

I bought 1 with 5xxwatts platinum PSU early this year. All included with trays.. The price was $178 including shipping.
They did not ship trays. And shipped later within a week.

One fan is falling with rattle noise after 2 months. I just bought a new identical fan with eBay bucks.

Overall ... I was satisfied with seller service

Since it is not an expander you should theoretically be able to use a 12g sas card and ssd's on the backplane as well since its essentially a mini sas to 4 sas breakout.

True - with a caveat. The backplane itself is only certified by SM for 6G performance. There are tighter design tolerances, trace spacing and ground requirements to get 12G working reliably.

That said - SM always over designs and this backplane will probably work for 12G (SAS3) as you describe. In fact, I have a SC216A with this backplane, I use an Intel SAS3 expander in front of it and have several 12G SAS drives installed with zero problems and zero detected errors to date. But i also understand this is not 'supported' or guaranteed to work. I'm happy with that for my purposes - just use 12G on it with eyes wide open and your probably all good.

The ones with a sas expander are way more than these ones, I was looking for a while and ended up just getting one new.
