Can anyone tell me about how much noise these make?
I have the 3.5 drive version and it's not quiet. You don't want it in the room with you. But it's not deafeningly loud. For that you'll need a 10G or infiniband switch.

1U chassis's require more air flow, if you replace the fans, keep an eye on your temps.

I'm looking for a 8 bay 2.5" JBOD enclosure and thinking maybe I can gut this machine and use it as a JBOD. Any idea if the backplane is 6GB though?

(I'm tight on space in my rack, so 1U is about the only option at the moment)

Listing says SAS113TQ, so the answer to your question (according to this: BPN-SAS-113TQ SAS/SATA Backplane - Thomas-Krenn-Wiki ) is yes

Mine has arrived. It's in remarkably good shape. Not abused at all. I popped a CPU and some ram in her and fired her up. loaded Windows on it temporarily and all is normal. I didn't realize this chassis was a 2.5 when I ordered it. I'm gonna build it up and keep it as is even tho I bought it for the MB. And the on board LSI 1068e was already flashed to IT mode. For 95 bucks delivered, it's a keeper.

Not as loud as I was expecting it to be. I set the fans to balanced in the BIOS. They start up full speed and then quieten down. Noisiest thing in the Room is a LB6M which is about 4 feet away, I can barely here this server over the switch when I'm sitting right in front of it. I wouldn't want it sitting beside me in a quiet room but it's not annoyingly loud by any means.

@Fritz: Do they come with rails? If no, then are you going to rackmount it? Ever since I got a rack, the first thing I think is how am I going to rack mount it. ;)

Sorry I didn't get respond earlier - I did get the chassis and haven't had a chance to unpack them - you're right CyberSkulls - they were impressively well wrapped! I looked at them pretty closely, and there's no easy way to convert them to a redundant PSU, but still, for the money, they are great little chassis's!

Finally got mine ready to go. I always embellish a new server. This one was no exception. I installed a couple of X5570's, a Dell Perc H310, 96GB ram (6 x 16GB) and just loaded Server 2012 R2 on an Intel S3700 400GB. I also order a dozen caddies for it. This will be my first all SSD server.

Nice!
I ordered 20 of these. My plan is to replace some older servers and setup a few additional PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch servers for these. One will be a pure SSD node using all 8 bays. Postgresql 9.6 comes with parallell aggregations(finally) so I can do some serious number crunching on the pure SSD node.

I would love to have space for an additional 10G card, but for now I will occupy the single PCIe lane with a Dell H310.

Yep, same here. Another slot for a 10G card would be nice.

Can the fans be replaced on this unit? I understand that it will get warmer but I would put in a spare L5640 in there. I just need it relatively quiet as it would go in the rack under my desk.
