Hi,

I picked up two SFN7122F dual-SFP+ PCIe NICs from a surplus seller on eBay recently. My plan was to install one in each of two machines. Either one, when installed in my ThinkStation P710 system, reports a slowly increasing 0.9V supply current. It starts at over 6A and climbs beyond 9A. After several hours of uptime, the NIC actually shuts down when it hits 10A of reported 0.9V supply current. My second computer runs Windows 11, and while the SFN7122F I installed in it seemed to work OK, I didn't leave it running for as long, and I don't know how to collect supply currents like I can with sensors in Linux.

Are both my SFN7122F cards faulty somehow?

[Edit: I'm seeing >9A current even with no transceivers installed in the SFP+ ports. I wanted to make sure that the issue wasn't caused by the transceivers I'm using.]

[Edit 2: In the second computer, but booted to a live Linux environment, I saw the same runaway current situation. Later, I experimented using the second computer with rubber-banding a strong 60mm fan to the heatsink, and current stayed below 5.4A and the highest regulator die temperature was 51°C, so it looks like the high current was a side-effect of overheating. I'm going to look into a more permanent fan setup along with re-pasting the heatsinks.]

[Edit 3: I've re-pasted the heatsink on one NIC with Arctic MX-4 and cranked up the fan speed in the ThinkStation. Now, regulator die temp is stable at around 49°C and 0.9V supply current is 5.29A. I'm going to mark this solved.]

Here's what sensors looks like after only a few minutes of uptime:
