First question, how loud is it and can the fans be swapped? Second question, will the work in IP mode? I've got a couple of connectx-3 cards running in ip mode that I would love to hook up to one of these...
IMHO I would not worry abt noise, is is pretty darn quiet comparatively to other gear you are likely to be running. By IP mode you mean IPoIB correct, if so yes, if you mean Ethernet mode NO this switch will not do that and is pure a IB switch.
Well shoot, I'm not sure if I could use it then. Right now I've got the the two cx3 cards in ethernet mode. What is involved in running IPoIB (sorry, new to IB)? Do they make 8 port 40Gb QSFP+ switches that do work in IP mode?
@Jeff Robertson
ipoib = ip over infiniband (=adapters in infiniband mode) , works with that switch
adapters in ethernet mode = pure ethernet, no infiniband involved. Doesn't work with that switch.
Mellanox has some newer switches with 12+ ports + support for ethernet. But like @Rand__ said the licenses are very expanesive (Starting at $ 3000)
@Rand__
This is one of the older, pure infiniband switches without support for ethernet
edit:
ah yes thats what I meant (just answering to "'are there switches with IP' yes, not this one though)
It should run IPoIB since that IB with IP encapsulated.
It o/c won't run native Ethernet mode
This would be used for a Windows cluster and since the back end is already set up re-configuring would probably break the whole thing... Ah well, I'll keep my eye out for an Ethernet capable switch, doesn't sound like the pricing is very friendly though.
Just DAC's but both copper AND fiber (as I scored a sweet deal on some MLX 5M fiber DAC's). I know that sounds funny, hell maybe the fiber version of the QSFP cable is not really a DAC but I consider it one as there are no optics in the mix.
