Thread for the discussion of SnapRAID - a snapshot based RAID5/6 parity system for JBODs with block based hashing for data integrity protection

Platforms: Windows, Linux

Official site: http://snapraid.sourceforge.net/
Download: http://snapraid.sourceforge.net/download.html
GUI (3rd party): Elucidate - http://elucidate.codeplex.com/

Pros: Free. Block level file hashing and integrity protection, file undelete, disks within array may have different sizes, disks with existing data retain original formatting (ie NTFS), add or remove disks at any time, small efficient 600k commandline executable, source code available.

Cons: No pooling, no GUI, no SMART monitoring, no scheduling. However some of these features are covered in the third party Elucidate GUI (http://elucidate.codeplex.com/)

Setup guide (Ubuntu Server): http://www.havetheknowhow.com/Configure-the-server/Install-SnapRAID.html

I have been looking into SnapRAID for a backup server project. To add to the the setup guide linked by odditory, there is a PPA for SnapRAID.
