I have a new chassis with a Supermicro BPN-SAS3-826EL1 backplane

My question is, do I need to connect 2 SAS Cables from this expander backplane to my HBA? From the owner's manual it looks like you do which is fine with me. But for most other expanders I have seen, you only need 1 cable

The next question is, can I go from the PRI-J3 and PRI-J4 ports into an internal to external adapter, and then add another disk shelf?

Only one cable is needed, but two will get you higher bandwidth. Also, which ports you use don't matter. You could hook up your HBA to #4 and use #1 to go to another external backplane.
