Sounds like a smart move. Apple is doing all their stuff in house and iCloud and other services are having seemingly more outages than other offerings. Samsung is likely going to build a PASS offering with this but probably use it mostly internally to power / house their own apps and save money from having to pay for AWS

It is important for the Illumos community for the independence. What is hopeful is that now with Samsung as Joyents largest "customer" that Joyent might be able to leverage that relationship with Vendors in order to be able to get more device drivers written for Illumos. Given the Sun diaspora currently at Joyent it is hopeful that they made the right demands for independence.
