anyway to test how bad a set of evo drives will get? I have 4 x 250GB left over that i plan to use in some form as cache for 4 spinner hdd. I want to test how they would be before i setup a new (to me) server that will act as my file storage for two other esxi nodes. (i'm still playing with how to build out that storage - freenas, raid card, etc.)
Whatever tests you do be sure to run them for more than 1-2 minutes.

If you're using them as read cache they may work ok for that depending how much writing is occurring too for adding to the cache.

No matter what tests you do be sure to test them for like 20 minutes straight and if you can record performance as it progresses, and then use excel to quickly graph/view the data for nice visualization.

If you want to see how drives perform in write/enterprise work loads then you can google: [drive name] steady state or [drive name] random write steady state performance. That should bring up SSD benchmark sites that actually do longer than the usual CDM type benchmarks.
