That asus is an expensive mb. $300+ I have an Aorus elite for a desktop. Not a bad board. Not perfect, but not bad. Thank you for the suggestions.
I got mine on ebay for a little over $100, and it's still rock solid. Not an approach everyone will take, but I have no problem with it, taking appropriate cautions.

None of the major motherboard makers are any good in my opinion.
If you want you can get something out of ASUS CSM lineup they do have features that corporations require like EOL notices etc.
Is the reliability higher? I have no idea.

Those look like the typical consumer boards with just a more stable production schedule. I seriously doubt they are improved for business usage.

I"m leaning towards just picking up a Supermicro board. I like the looks of the X11SCA-F. Old enough to be relatively inexpensive, modern enough to be efficient with decent performance.

If you want more than 4 cores and ECC prepare to shell out from 200USD

I bet you can find E-2226G for less than $200. ;)

Yeah ideally i'd get 6c/12t to sort of match the ryzen, i don't know what the relative performance of the two chips is. ECC would be nice, but probably not mandatory.

E-2136 is close-ish in performance, 12 thread, and i can get that for ~ $170ish.

Hard to match the performance of that old Ryzen though.

I'm only seeing around 300.
Some sellers seem to have a much lower target than what they list at. I've had offers around ~$150 accepted for E-2226G, but that particular CPU is 6c/6t, half the threads you're wanting.

For low loads HT is better. Heavy sustained loads are better off without HT BUT as always there are exceptions.

I'd say it's more of a low load machine, with occasional high loads thrown in.
transcoding media when needed, analyzing video occasionally, rest of the time sit there and run the house and such.

Found a deal on a Supermicro X12SCA-F. Gets me even newer, can support ECC if i want, has IPMI, all the usual yadda yadda. Roughly equivalent to the Ryzen for core count, threads.

Anyone see an issue moving to this platform?

Annd she's gone... The AsRock mb died today. no boot at all. shut down to take the intel nic out and it won't come back. Even stripped to nothing it's dead. Bye bye asjunk.

Just in case you're not aware, for transcoding: your X12SCA-F should passthrough iGPU from CPUs equipped with such; QSV takes the load off the CPU and is more power efficient.

Will iKVM still work with iGPU enabled on this board?
