Run the X7 or upgrade?

As per this thread

I know the X7 series is power hungry and hot (therefore LOUD)
I have extra L5420's and lots of RAM.

Do you think it's wise to use them or should I upgrade to something newer/power/thermal efficiency?

It will be my home VM host and big storage. a constant 5-10 VM's almost always idle.

Depends on whether you can a: afford to run them and b: can you afford to upgrade. personally I would look to sell it off and look for some thing newer. If you can afford to go new I would look at some low tdp E5 v2 or v3 cpu's , if you need to go used I'd look at a pair of L5640's or low tdp e5 v1

CA power is pretty expensive... something like $50-100 to run per month (at least for my old supermicro x7)

On the other hand NEW equipment adds up... but I know I can get some 1366 boards for cheap ands the chips for less.

Thoughts on reliability?

Well if you need 1366 let me know I have a lot to get rid of still

But, I'd save a bit and go with an E5 v1/v2/v3 to save power, v2/v3 are obv. better

It's a slipper upgrade slope... hahaha

Ror the purpose of my home I think an avaton would do it... or a xeon D or the next brand new tech!

Yeah, a Xeon D or next gen would be awesome but for that $ youcan get a kickass E5

hmm.... I need to figure out what models I want... TBH Im familiar with the various modelnumbers/specs.
