Hi all,

I recently took a gamble on a "broken" Ruckus R510 on eBay for really cheap. It looked like it was still new-in-box, with literally just the word "broken" written in sharpie on the box, so I figured it was worth a gamble. My goal is to load Unleashed on it and install it at my parents' house the next time I visit (along with a new pfSense/OPNSense router).

The unit seems to power on ok, and I was able to flash the latest Unleashed firmware onto it. But I'm seeing some odd behavior.

  • Both network ports seem to only want to link at 100 Mbps (need to confirm with another laptop and network cable, though)
  • The first couple of times after flashing unleashed and then doing a factory reset and going through the setup wizard, it would then not let me log in to the web UI with the username and password I set (ssh access with those credentials works, though)
  • Does not broadcast the SSID I set up in the wizard, just the default Configure.Me-XXXXXX SSID
Thus far I have tried:

  • Reflashing with Unleashed
  • Multiple resets with holding downthe reset button
  • Factory reset using the CLI

I have not tried:

  • New network cable/computer
  • Adopting into my own Unleashed network (a couple of R710 units)

I can provide more detail later tonight...I just wanted to get the ball rolling on this to see if anyone has any suggestions for me to look at next. Any advice is appreciated (even if it's just "yeah, it's dead"). Thanks!

I've had a chance to do some more testing...

Using a different laptop and different cable, I get a 1000Mbps link instead of 100Mbps. So that must have been a fluke.

I tested with a few different Unleashed versions:

  • R510_200.10.10.5.229.bl7 - Version I started with, had the login issue and the no-SSIDS-broadcasting issue
  • R510-200.9.10.4.212.bl7 - Downgraded to this one, had the same issues
  • R510_200.7.10.2.339.bl7 - Downgraded to this one next, it seemed to work ok. SSIDs were broadcast properly (no RecoverMe or ConfigureMe SSIDs).
After going back to 200.7.10.2.339, I attempted to start moving forward (back to 200.9.10.4.212) and the SSID issue came back. Resetting to defaults did not change anything.

At that point, I temporarily gave up on setting it up by itself and tried adopting it into my Unleashed network. After upgrading it to the matching firmware version (R510_200.10.10.5.246.bl7), it seems to be working fine and my SSIDs are being broadcast:

Now, to remove it from my Unleashed setup and go back to trying it on its own.
