I have. as that is what is in my CSE 847 as the front of that chassis.

I had issues with my 3 TB didks. until I moved them to the rear 12 drive backplane.

I am retiring that chassis. going to a smaller foot print with larger drives

HMMM That's strange.. I have an 846 with 4TBs (SAS2 backplane) no issue, another at home with 10TB, 5TB, 2TB (nearly full, most are 5tb and 10tb) and a couple more with misc drives >2TB, all SAS2 backplane and no issues.

Did you try to figure out what it was possibly beside the SAS2 backplane?
Cable? Connector?
What was the backplane model you had? (expander, dual port expander, direct attach, etc...)

I did not have enought time to figure out what was wrong. it is half disassembled and I am working on other projects right now.

it may have been a cable or a SAS controller. I just have not worked through all of the permutations

I've used up to 12TB drives with SAS2 backplanes and never had a problem. Don't think the backplane was your problem.

One explanation could be If the SAS2-846EL1 backplane were being driven by a SAS1 controller. Or if the front backplane had insufficient Molex power. But any combination of SAS2/SAS3 HBA and backplane should have no drive size limitations.
Agreed. My 836 and 846 with SAS2 backplanes are just fine with 14TB drives and a 9211-8i HBA.

I got in on the $200 one earlier in the week. It arrived today, but without a frame. I dont have an 846 yet, so I hope thats not an issue.

Now only have 4 in stock. The boards do not have the mounting brackets. So I'll go down to $140, since they'll cost around $30 to source. Thanks

Looks like my backplane is a dud. Before I contact the vendor, all four lights arent supposed to be on, right? According to the manual, two are supposed to be off or blinking if all is normal.

I have tried two motherboards and three controllers.

I guess I need to test mine asap. I bought one as a backup for my 847 and 846 chassis that have SAS3 backplanes. It's kind of a PITA to swap out so I didn't prioritize testing it.
